Soupy Sales Dead At 83

A sad day. White Fang must be in mourning. .. You tube has replays of his stuff. Kids from the 60's might remember Soupy.. How could not a comedian who performs under the influence of booze not be funny.
..
.
.DETROIT — Soupy Sales, the rubber-faced comedian whose anything-for-a-chuckle career was built on 20,000 pies to the face and 5,000 live TV appearances across a half-century of laughs, has died. He was 83.

Sales died Thursday night at Calvary Hospice in the Bronx, New York, said his former manager and longtime friend, Dave Usher. Sales had many health problems and entered the hospice last week, Usher said.

At the peak of his fame in the 1950s and '60s, Sales was one of the best-known faces in the nation, Usher said.

"If President Eisenhower would have walked down the street, no one would have recognized him as much as Soupy," Usher said.

At the same time, Sales retained an openness to fans that turned every restaurant meal into an endless autograph-signing session, Usher said.

"He was just good to people," said Usher, a former jazz music producer who managed Sales in the 1950s and now owns Detroit-based Marine Pollution Control.

There goes my standard "old school comedian" joke fodder subject.

RIP Soupy

Hey kids, this is what I want you to do. Go into your fathers pockets, and find all those dirty pieces of paper with pictures of old men, and send them to me, Soupy Sales.

I remember seeing that live, don't remember how old I was, but I thought "Wow, who would do that?".
Apparently, lots of kids did it.

Yup, Soupy was a top banana.

RIP.

There needs to be a topless dancer dressed in balloons hiding behind the door at the funeral parlor.

I may well hit myself in the face with a pie as an homage.

I remember that, too! My brothers and I couldn't understand why out mom got up and turned Soupy off that day. Yes, youngsters, TV's in the 60's had NO remote!

This is kind of amazing too, Soupy Sales is responsible for the only footage existing of jazz legend Clifford Brown.

At the time , Soupy originated from Detroit.. Reports were, he was drunk that day.. Or at least had a few.. Just a happy joke.. ?.. Not really. As I recall reading, the FCC did not think it funny. Soupy gota few days off , so guess White Fang went unfed.

First I'm reading of his passing. He was funny, I remember my mother laughing at stuff I didn't think was funny as a kid. He could really mix it up.

Soupy was great. I always thought that the local legendary Uncle Floyd Show borrowed heavily from the zany production of Sales' kid's show.

I had the pleasure of seeing him do standup a bunch of years ago. He came across as a warm, genuine, funny guy. That's not such a common thing in the world of comedy clubs. He killed, but nicely.

When I was living in Toledo, I went every time he came to the Comedy Club on Heatherdowns Blvd. We would always get front table seats and Soupy was right there in your face. OMG he had us in stitches every time from start to finish. He was such a little guy too. I will miss him.

I just watched an old clip on You Tube from one of his shows. I almost pissed my pants he's so funny. He was a friggin comic genius. You gotta love that.

Thank you Soupy.

They do not make new comics like old comics. Generally speaking.. NBC's first night talk show was Steve Allen. Anyone seen his clips.. He'd get himself banned by the FCC for his brazenness. No one would today.. Too coward.
