The Island is on FIRE!

According to my sources, 12 gas storage tanks on the major refinery in PR, exploded. And the amazing thing, that happened a freeking week ago and it's still burning. Five counties in stage of emergency and here I past the whole week watching the balloon boy.

I've seen those tanks, they are(were) big.

Impossible. I watched GH and Sonny and Claudia are there for some high level mob meeting and there's no sign of a fire.

Uh, watch your local news? I actually logged on to see if anyone here actually lives in PR as there are stories going around my neighborhood, people are saying it was terrorist, they are also saying that there were other explosions around the island that have not been reported, all rumors till someone that lives there chimes in.

I can see why they'd want to keep it quiet, if they think it's a terrorist attack.

I live about 2mi from the oil refinery and it has been mayhem. The initial explotion was extremely loud, and the ground shook upwards to 3.0 on the Richter scale.

Can't wait for the English Only folks to blame it on their so called "Puerto Rican Terrorists" and use it as part of their anti-hispanic propaganda.

I have no idea what happened but I grew up there and here's my list of possible causes:

1) Some idiot with a high caliber weapon, shoot at the stuff to see what could happen.

2) The site was poorly maintained, leaked some oil and a spark started it all.

3) A distracted smoker.

4) A disgruntled employee.

5) An insurance fraud by the site's management.

Cost savings measures and failure to follow procedure most likely led to this explosion. When BP's plant in Galveston blew up, that was the primary reason. Big Industry sometimes likes to gamble with their bottom line and our lives. Sad but true.

That is sad beyond belief. What is it with this country's egotistical sense of importance?

You'd think with all the 24hr news channels it'd get more coverage but I agree w/you, everytime I flipped by it seemed to be something about balloon boy. I did see the story in the Denver Post, granted even there it was relegated to the back pages of the front section.

Don't blame us. If PR would just give up and take statehood, help would already be on the way.

It technically did not happen a week ago. It happened shortly after midnight on Thursday. It appears to be contained and under control. It was expected for it to take several days to contain. No one was hurt or killed. The air quality in San Juan is listed as satisfactory. All these things add up to make it newsworthy, but not world stopping.

Help is on the way. The US Coast Guard is on the scene aiding in the fight. Local companies like Pfizer and Abbott have sent their own fire fighting equipment to help.

Heres what the U.S. has done for Puerto Rico, http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/1152449.stm in a nut shell, they took this area away from the locals, bombed it to hell, then, after years of the Puerto Rican people fighting to get there land back the U.S. agrees to stop the bombing, but, the U.S. declares the area a wildlife resrve and now the locals have no access to many parts on the island, and are getting cancer from the areas they can get to. Oh? did I mention the U.S. has not cleaned up the mess they left behind? you think that has something to do with the area being declared a wildlife reserve?

I dare you to go to Pueto Rico, set up a small stage, and say exacty what you just posted here. I double dog dare you!

Don't you know the sole purpose of the internet is to say things and then not have to take responsibility for them?
