Help Mr Coffeecake find a new game.

Ok. I saw KT's "Oblivion" thread and this reminded me of something I need to ask you guys. So Mr Coffeecake is going into withdrawal. He's played WoW for the last five years or so, but we stopped this spring after getting tired of the grind. Now he's been playing Age of Empires, Demigod, and some other free games he's downloaded, but he doesn't enjoy the gameplay like he did with WoW, Final Fantasy, and EverQuest. Got any suggestions for some decent PC games?

Taste is a personal thing. I used to play Warbirds until I got some lag problems.
It's a fantastic game, make sure you find the teachers to get started.
Right now the only thing I am playing on the internet is Quake Wars. This is entirely because it's free.

I also like informal squad combat; I can remember the first days of Team Fortress.
Back then sounds pasted from movies were popular. Btw, have you ever played TF? It has evolved over the years, I liked it better back then.

I have never done any of the big online games, unless you count Warbirds. WB is great, but not massive.

I am considering Eve.

It's not about money, most things I just don't like. Games where the magic dominates, for example.

for role-playing, I would take oblivion. Maybe Fallout 3, but I didn't like that one as much. Does he have Steam for buying games? The Witcher is on sale and had good reviews, 3rd person RPG i think.

Yeah, I've played expensive games that were poorly set up and free games that have serious graphics. Only problem with some of the "free" games is that you can only progress so far before you have to start pouring money into it.

I haven't heard of Team Fortress. He was really into Counterstrike for awhile, but I dont' know if he still likes those FPS stuff anymore. Will have to check out Warbirds. He was thinking about Warhammer, but I think it'll be too similar to World of Warcraft.

Hey, I hadn't heard of Steam. Looks pretty good, almost too good, in fact. Are there any catches involved?

No catches (that I've found) with Steam. Been using it for several years -- Half Life 2, Team Fortress, Day of Defeat, Portal, etc.

same here. You will probably want a fast internet connection though since you have to download the games (some are 3-7+ gigabytes). I would highly suggest the "Orange Box" if he's starting from scratch. Portal and Team Fortress 2 are worth it alone.

oh yeah, Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl is also on sale. I went on a buying spree in the last week, I'm a sucker for a sale.
