My dog has cancer

Total bummer - she's young too. Less than 3 years. I noticed a lump on one of her breast on Sunday. Took her in today and the vet thinks its cancer. Now I get to decide if I do surgery or not. They want $600 to remove and test the tumor plus to spay her. I've been totally feeding her people food all night.

If the cancer hasn't metastasized, it is highly treatable.

Yep, that it is, and a dog bounces back very fast......much better than a human.

I'm glad it was caught early. We lost our first mastiff to a bone cancer. He was only 5.

My dog Sasha is curled up at my feet right now and she sends you a wet nose and is offering up her ears for you to scrunch.

I don't suppose you can get any of the dog insurance with that sort of preexisting condition? Petsmart let us get the lowest level which paid for itself in 2 visits worth of vaccinations. Something to at least look into if money is tight.

Sorry to hear that Ravenmore. Have a friend whose brother went through much the same thing. Last I heard, his dog was doing good. They got all the tumor, no chemo, a bit of post op stuff with a suture opening up, drainage tube coming out, but overall, the dog did okay.

If the doctors think it's worth it to do the surgery then that means they have hope! And I do too.

I just went through this with my Doberman Gingersnap, They told me she had less than a year providing I cut her leg off. Thank god I got a second opinion because it was a miss diagnosis. Don't worry till you have too Tumors are very common on dogs & most of them are non cancerous. $600 to spay & remove the lump is not bad, Did they do a biopsy yet?
I wish you the best, I could never imagine not having a dog
Charlie

I think I'm going to go ahead and schedule the surgery. I let Molly sleep in the people bed last night. She slept most the night with her head on my chest.

Btw - I do have health insurance for both my dogs though Banfield (vet inside Petsmart). Not sure how good it is. Their estimate shows the procedure without the insurance as being over $1k, so it's reducing it by about half apparently.

Thanks for all the well wishes. I'll pass them on to Molly in the form of a treat.

I recommend "steak therapy."

As is the case with many pharmaceuticals, repeated doses are necessary for maximum therapeutic effect. However, most dogs that undergo it show immediate improvement in mood and energy.

Banefield has very high standards for care.

She's young. If you caught it early the prognosis is excellent.

Ask if they plan chemo after surgery. Cost can quickly rise to $3500+. Not saying not to do it, I've done it twice, but normally the under $1000 first action is just the start. Best wishes that it's a mis-diagnosis or so early there is no need for chemo. +1 on dogs healing lots faster han human beings.
