Off the team, now!

That would be my judgement if I was his coach. A half game suspension is nothing for what this thug was doing.

"Coach Urban Meyer suspended Spikes on Monday, two days after the defensive captain apparently attempted to gouge the eyes of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey in a 41-17 victory. "

sure...but once the play is over, its over...you don't continue and you certainly don't try to gouge out someone's eye.

It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye...and then the real fun begins.

That's way more than contact.

But anyway, Meyer is a punk, and he runs a punk team.

Why is this worse than a late hit, a blow to the head, horse collaring or cut blocking?

depends....a late hit that was not clearly intentional? I can understand that happening. A late hit clearly intended to injure the opponent, well after the play is down.....kick em out!
A blow to the head? Umm....happens all the time during the play. Afterwards? Kickem out.
Cut blocking? Its a penalty for a reason. Keep doing that, and you should be banned from the game.

When I was a kid in Little League something similar happened.

I was playing pitcher and the kid at bat got a hit. Another guy who was on base was coming home, but the outfield had it under control. As soon as the runner came around 3rd (too fast to stop), he realized the ball was going to get to catcher well before he was.

He kept running, full speed, with his two fingers out...trying to poke the catcher (MY catcher and MY buddy) in the eyes. Apparently he didn't think anybody would notice.

I'm no longer in the play and happened to see him. No way was I going to let him poke my buddy Willy in the eyes. I ran over from the mound and tackled him half way between 3rd and home.

The parents in the stands went bonkers. Started screaming that I should be thrown out of the game for bad sportsmanship, etc......

The ump looks at us both and very loudly threw the other guy (the base runner) out of the game. Then turned to the stands to explain......apparently (luckily for me) he'd seen what the runner was doing too!!!

Karma rocks!!
