Examples set for children.

I just got reminded of how much a parent means to a child in terms of being a role model.

Setting examples for them on what is proper in terms of conducting their lives....how what they do affects others around them whether it be positive or negative. So many times people will say that a child is 'bad'. But the definition of being a bad child can be different to different children. It really depends upon their environment. What they see and what they learn. What they perceive as being a correct way to handle things vs a need to go for instant gratification and going on luck. Some kids just flat out don't understand what being bad is.

But some kids see what they don't want to become....

Granted I am not saying that all of a child's development is due to the parent. Sometimes there are circumstances that cannot be helped, such as poverty, education and not being able to get proper nutrition, among other things.

But do what you can as a parent. Give them your all.

Teach them to love, to respect, to do their best, to believe in themselves, to honour not only self but others as well. Show them what giving truly is, how to appreciate life and what they have. Teach them to accept mistakes as lessons and that failure does not mean that they are less of a person. Show them what hard work is and the rewards of such. Teach them about acceptance and tolerance and forgiveness. Give them the tools they need to build a productive life. And teach them how to use them.

Love your children.

Perhaps i should specify that I serve well as a bad example to be pointed out by
my friends and acquaintances that have children: "See his hand? Thats why you can't play with fireworks.'

If you need a lesson in how much influence you CAN have on a child, and how QUICKLY it can change, notice the difference before & after their first quarter in school.

It is the greatest responsibility a person can have... to raise a child well.

One cannot do it alone either... it really does take a community and within that community of friends and family one wold hope certain people would stand out as excellent role models and teachers.

I am very fortunate in that regard

In the case where one doesn't have help, it's got to be the parent. That is something that should have been considered before conception. You know, the 'what if's'. Not everything will be roses and caviar.

Sometimes is drugs and ghettos. But still within that, has to be some kind of foundation. Lots of kids make it out of the ghetto and become positive productive adults.

I remember when I was about four, seeing my dad spit on the carpet and rub it in with his shoe.

So the next day, in front of my mom, I hawked up a loogie, spat it on the carpet and rubbed it with my shoe. The last thing I remember was telling my mom that dad did it that way. She said he did not.

When I woke up, Mom was telling Dad what I had did, pointing out the spot on the carpet. Dad was just playing it cool and not reacting much either way, as to not elicit further any commentary from his cowering son.

It was about then that any role model ideas in my head went out the window.
