Boil water warning issued three days ago

...and I only heard about it today. I've been drinking litres of unboiled tap water.

Do you boil the water in the bottle or do you empty the bottle into the pan first?

I'm already tired of not being able to brush my teeth with unboiled tap water. Screw it. I'm using straight tap water, I'll give the boiled stuff to the dog. I aint afraid of E Coli.

You'd rather risk yourself than go through the trouble of boiling the water?

You're probably two days late with that suggestion - the warning was issued three days ago. Usually the first things people do when that happens is buy as much water as they can.

I agree. I work for a water system and a boil order being issued is certainly a sign that something is wrong someplace in the system, but it's not necessarily a sign that you personally are at any risk. We've never had to issue one, but we're lucky: our water comes from Yosemite, not local sources that could be more easily contaminated.

Speaking off the record - you could get some DPD total chlorine reagent and put a little water (10mm or so) into a glass and add the packet. If it turns pink, then you've got chlorine in your water. If you've got chlorine, then it's unlike there are any pathogens present (or they would have used up the chlorine). Maybe test strips from the local pool supply place would accomplish the same thing (but they have to be rated for very low chlorine levels, like 1 to 3 ppm, to pick up chlorine in drinking water).

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

EColi and other food/water borne illnesses sometimes take 7-10 days to manifest themselves. They have to reach a cartain population level to go symptomatic.

By the way, brushing your teeth is a low risk exposure.....the mouth is a very hostile environment for enterobacteria.

I'm boned, anyway, was chugging unboiled tap water all over the place before I heard. I'm more concerned about my dog, so far, he's fine. He will get boiled water until I'm sure it's safe for him to drink regular tap water.

Go buy a water purifier from the camping dept at your local outdoor store. Pump tap water from a pan (or just fill a clean sink) into bottles with the purifier and you're fine.

Once the crisis is over, go buy a water dispenser and 2-3 bottles for it and use the water kiosk regularly. Gives you water in an emergency if needed while everyone else is running out and spending money they don't have to buy water that's not available.

The dog will be fine.

If you live, learn. That's mom always told me. Son, if you live after running with scissors, you should learn something from it.

This is acutually the fault of the interwebs. I don't watch local tv anymore. I don't listen to radio. It has become very convenient to become isolated from important local news such as this. If this is your situation as well, stocking up on bottled water for an emergency like this won't do you a darn bit of good. Damn interwebs and forums about bicycles.

So, what if your water main bursts right after you hit hay and get up in the middle of the night for a glass H2O? Should you check your local news outlet website first? Yes, but will anyone? No.

Your water system may be operated by the oddly and vaguely Canadian "Happy Tree Friends" http://www.mondominishows.com/index.php?IdEpisode=644
