Symphony Orchestra

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra has tickets for $11 for those under 37. I've never been to a real symphony orchestra. Is it worth it? This Saturday is Handel's Messiah.

I agree. Totally worth it. Dress nicely even if it isn't required, and remember to turn off your phone.

Symphonies can be pretty intense.. Does not Detroit have a classical music station. ?.. Never hurts to take in every kind of experience to be a well rounded person.. .. Classical music is everywhere.. Example , William Tell's Overture might be thought of as the Quaker Oaks jingle.

Oh yeah, I'm a huge fan of classical music. I've only been to high school symphonies and that was back when I was in high school. I've just never had the chance to get out of town and to somewhere big enough to have a decent symphony.

If you're a huge fan of classical music, then why would it even be a question? Normal-priced tickets usually start at $30, and student tickets can even be upwards of $20 depending on where you go.

Hearing professional musicians play live can't be compared to hearing high school students or listening to the radio. You should definitely go.

For what it's worth my wife plays with 2 part type Symphonies here in the N. Texas area, the Los Colinas Symphony (aka: Garland and Arlington Symphonies), as well as the Midland Odessa Symphony. A lot of professional symphony orchestras are having budget problems right now due to the economy so I encourage anyone that can please support your local professional musicians if you can.

Used to play oboe in a classical wind ensemble - I would love to go to listen to that and the price is darn reasonable. GO!

Totally worth it. $11 is a ridiculously low price, too.

37 is a weird cut off age, tho.

I bet it has something to do with an anniversary of something.

I would go. Then again, I do go from time to time. My son is a music major in college and we've always been fairly plugged in to classical music. In fact, both my sons listen to almost no contemporary music. They listen to classical most of the time.

"The Messiah" for $11? Don't miss it. "He was despised" always rocks me.

It takes 3 days to process the "37/11 club" request so I don't know if we'll make if for Messiah but the following weekend is Holst's The Planets and they said $11 tickets go on sale a week before the event. I would very much forgo Handel to listen to Holst.

Ooohhh - you totally have to go. I loved Holst's The Planets.

And like others said, dress up - at least a little.

Tough choice. "Messiah" would be my pref., although "Mars" and "Jupiter" are nice, also.

+1 on all the advice to go. LIVE music is just special compared to listening to CD's. I'll admit my bias here, as a part time amature musician. But I love to attend concerts that I'm not playing in too, listening to LIVE concerts is awesome.

Changed my Avatar pic in honour of this thread!
Actually playing Handel in that pic, but not Messiah.
