I need a glass of wine... stat.

Actually, I already have one, but I needed it bad.

Found out today the company I am working for is being sold. Well- 90% of it. The remainder, essentially my division, is becoming its own company, which will consist of my boss and myself, plus a few freelancers.

On one hand, I'm pretty stoked - many opportunities lie before me. Since returning to the company 6 months ago (you may remember its a merger of the company I worked for before I went to Denver) I've felt stifled creatively, and stunted professionally. I've now got the freedom to help develop this brainchild into something pretty awesome.

On the other hand, I'm scared of the unknowns. Where's my next paycheck going to come from? What happens to my benefits? If the new company (which I've essentially become a direct partner in) sinks, I'm going to feel pretty responsible. I'm concerned what may be expected of me might be more than I can deliver. Do I know enough? This is a position I saw myself being in 5+ years from now in my career, not now.

oh man, its been a heck of a year.

My manager and a few of my colleagues did that back in the 90's. I couldn't go because I had a family to support and needed to supply a paycheck. Eventually they sold their company to an up-and-coming corporation called "Netscape" and walked away with about 140 million to share.

thanks! yeah, my first thought was, "should I start sending out resumes now, or wait until next week?"
then i realized it could turn out to be something pretty cool. and if it doesn't work out, there's always unemployment!

I like this! souds like some optimism for me, although I'm sorry for you

my boss has a wife and 2 kids to support. If he wasn't pretty confident, I think he'd be headed a different direction. I can afford to take a gamble on it...

No worries. I wasn't on the short list of people to ask first and those were the ones who made all the real money.

Arti, from what I've seen, you don't have too much to worry about. Worst case scenario for you would probably be a couple weeks unpaid vacation....the upside potential is huge. Go for it, would be my advice.
