The Sony ad on this site is starting to get to me!!!

I love this site first of all. Im on all hours of the day learning new stuff. BUT, There are a few ads on here that are more than just a simple picture. In particular the Sony ad is really getting to me. Anytime you move your mouse across it, it opens a small video in the middle of the screen. Well today, I have done something about it. Please do the same if its getting on your nerves.

I use firefox and I just disabled java and now all ads are gone. I understand that if I go to a site that requires it, I will have to turn it back on. But in the mean time, I have defeated it. (for now, who know what kind of ads they will think of next.)

Thanx for listening to my rant. Happy cycling.

Disabling Java in this case is like killing flies with a sledgehammer, as many other places use Java web apps for peaceful purposes. As suggested, install AdBlock Plus or similar and get back to learning.

Firefox's NoScript plugin allows you to selectively enable/disable javascripts on different sites.

The LG banner ad is just as bad as the Sony ad.
I'm sure the advertising minds behind these things think, "Wow, people will really take notice of these when they pop to fill the whole screen!"
From a consumer's viewpoint, I'm irritated enough by having to continually shrink the ads back down that I'm now biased against purchasing stuff from company.

I put it on par with mail advertising companies who, when you call to have your name removed from their list, make a misspelling of your name to the same address just to keep sending mailers. It's annoying, and I make a point not to buy their products in the future, even if a competitor's price is higher.

Ironic, because using Java on a typical website is like killing flies with a sledgehammer and incinerating their corpses.

I too absolutely loathe ads that cover content. Unless a site is compelling, I often look for alternatives that aren't so obtrusive, and I have a strict policy of never clicking on such an ad. The same is true for "pop unders" that open a window behind your current one so you'll see it when you close your browser, and ads that have deliberately distracting images and colors, especially when they're unrelated to the ad content (what does a dancing silhouette have to do with getting a college degree online?)

I appreciate the place of advertising in supporting the availability of free resources online, but I won't support you for making my browsing experience miserable.

Site owners and advertisers both need to start realizing such tactics are counterproductive, meaning we need to make it so by refusing to follow such cues, no matter how legitimate the free iPod for filling out a banking survey (don't forget your SS#) ad looks.

    No ads!
    More private message space!
    Larger avatars!
    Custom smilies!
    Embedded videos in post
    Photo gallery!
    Private social group forums!
    And more!
