If you could start over...

What would your career path be? Assume it's not financially impossible to go back to school.

That was one of the things that I really wanted to do. The other was be a forest ranger. Well, I got to be a forest ranger, or would that be forest owner, or builder.

same career, I just wouldn't have thrown it away for love by moving away from an established set of jobs to another state and starting over without a support group or network of school and work contacts

Sorry if this sounds racist but those of you that know me know that I'm not, I took a government test to become a Forest Ranger and lost out to three "Americans" that didn't know how to fill out the application, they could barely speak english as we know it, but they got the three available jobs, and two of them didn't have High School diplomas!? I also found out that one passed on the job and another quit a week into it, but I was never called back even though I tried to re-apply and was told there were no more openings? go figure.

Architecture or related engineering; of course, the last several years have taken the perceived silliness of 'forest ranger' out of the loop, too. Boy, did my mother ever NOT do me any favors!

You tried that once. The ball team kept getting busted for steroid use, not to mention all the dissent among the office staff...

Try it again. Now that Oral is gone, there is a vacuum in the tele-preacher universe.

I would find a career which allow me to invest in myself as part of my career path.

If I were artistic, then graphic arts/design.
If I were handy with tools, then mechanical engineering
If an "outdoorsy" type, then perhaps something in the environmental field

etc.

As part of my career path I would have to acknowledge that the world economy pretty much sux most of the time. yes, there are those who can make billions no matter what the state of our finances seems to be. They are the exception and I would prefer to rely upon myself rather than the dream that I am one of "them." So, I'd have to pick a career path which allows me to work from home and still make sufficient income to support my family.

I would stay away from those careers which are current "application magnets." You know, those careers that Sally Caruthers stumps for on late night TV as part of some unknown, unaccredited internet university commercial.

I think I'd have enjoyed being a civil engineer working on water projects. I enjoy working on the water system but it'd be more interesting to me to be more on the design side I think. (especially after seeing some of the absolutely impractical ideas our current crop of engineers comes up with: at least I'd have some sense of how to design stuff that's easier to operate and maintain).

But my bachelors was in philosophy and it's a little late in life to be going to all that school again. I wouldn't have enough work years left in me to pay back the loans!

Well bikeforums bleeped my job, so I'll go with another. Ultimately I'd like to do something in the arts. I just wish I was a bit more artistic.

I'd not change a thing. Who and what I am is the sum of my experiences. If I changed things, I'd be a different person. Live with no regrets has always been my motto.
