Daughter bumped her head (advice wanted)

My daughter is at a baby sitters for between a half hour and an hour each morning. The baby sitter has three children, about 8, 4, and 1.5. My daughter is eight months (this is not a math problem!). The youngest child seems to be territorial (normal at that age?). When I picked my daughter up today she had a bump on her head (pic below). The baby sitter said she bumped her head on a table (my daughter climbs and tries to stand by herself sometimes). Is this kind of stuff normal at baby sitters houses? Does this bump look serious enough to go to a doctors? I am fairly ticked off and may not be thinking entirely rationally right now, so what are your thoughts? I appreciate any helpful advice...

Kids bump into stuff all the time, so a mark like this by itself is not remarkable.

What is more important is how the kid is acting now. Quieter than usual? No eating? Not following your movements with their eyes? Not reacting to stimuli as usual?

If kid is acting as per normal, don't panic - just keep an eye on things.
If kid is not acting as per normal, go to the hospital for a check.

The other kid is doing what kids that age do - being selfish because it is all about "me". They are too young to have worked out the bigger concepts such as being polite.

Any abnormal behaviors like overly sleepy or apparent cognitive deficit? The bump loops like a pretty normal goose egg, but it's your baby and you know her normal behaviors best. If you are worried, my best advice would be to give the pediatrician office a ring.

Good advice above, and perfectly normal behavior for a 1.5 year old. Just keep and eye on thing, if it happens too often, then maybe look for another sitter.
I take it this is your first? Get used to it, bump and brusies, and cuts are part of growing up.
My son went to full time day care, he had a bad habit of running full speed and looking in another direction, the result is not hard to figure out. The worst was when they called and told me about one incident. When I picked him up(it was a good place I trusted thier assement), he had a lump on his head that looked like half an egg had been glued on. And it doesn't matter who is watching the kid either. My Mother watched my son a few days a week, one day sitting at my desk my pone ring. It's my mom, she says "I just want to let you know I got the bleeding stopped, but I'm taking him to the doctor anyway, bye" click. WTF!?!? Twenty minutes later, the doctors office called, "You have to meet your mother and son at the plastic surgens office son you can sign the papers for the surgery". It turned out to be a long night.

Thanks for the words and advice. I've calmed down now, I think my daddy threat level was on orange, and posting helped me alleviate that. It's good to know these bumps and such are normal. Her affect is normal, she is all smiles and she ate well. Thanks again, I really appreciate the insight.

Have you people been wearing your helmets for too long? It's a freakin head injury...on a baby no less. You take her to the doctor and have her checked out, period.

Do you have a pediatrician? If not, PM me. I can recommend a very good one that's about 4 miles from your house.

    This!

Something similar happened to a friend of mine when she was this age. I don't mean to upset you icedmocha but, she had a stroke a few days afterwards. Take your little girl to the doctors please.

Kids bump into things all the time. Given that it's a young baby, I'll take it to the ER to check it out.

TIP: Go to a good ER who has x-ray equipment. Otherwise you'll might end up doing multiple trips between medical facilities till tomorrow morning.

But don't worry to much yet. Kids are 90% rubber.

Call your family doc and ask if you should bring her in. At 8 months, I don't know. Hmm, I see I'm close to 9 hrs late.

Thank you Chip - I was thinking the same thing.

Because I tend to be paranoid... I would also be very cautious and watchful about a child in day care that gets hurt. Does this person watch too many kids? Is the property unsafe? My thoughts, this young mother has way too much on her plate and first priority will be her own children, not yours.

Sorry for throwing in the nasty stuff but I just hate the thought of a young child in the care of another mother who can barely watch her own children. Does your child crawl or walk yet? How did she fall? Question the mother about all that.

BTW - the mother should be paying for the medical treatment. She I hope is a licensed day care worker and has insurance. If not, she should have Homeowner's medical coverage for such a thing.

Sure it's probably nothing, but you don't mess around with thwacks to the head. If ya got insurance, take her to an urgent care facility or clinic - better safe than sorry. If you don't have insurance, just call 911 and let my tax dollars pay for a nice EMT to check her out. I'd much rather foot the bill for a kid's noggin than for pork-n-bombs.

Of course I'm only a grandpa, we ain't supposed to know anything about kids.

Sounds like this was your 1st child. Your concerns are perfectly understandable! (Been there, done that). When the 2nd or 3rd child arrives you view the situation with a slightly different perspective. Don't get me wrong, your concerns are certainly valid, but kids are tough little buggers!!!

I took my kids to the hosital any time they bumped their head, good to be on the safe side when it comes to the most important people in your life, also, never, ever trust the baby sitter, thats why my wife and I never used them, if one of us couldn't be with the kids we just didn't go where we wanted, needed, or had to go.

Kids Fall it's cool. It's all about attitude. If they are not acting normally there is something wrong. After 18 months you know your kids personality.

Yeah, after 18 months you automagically turn into a brain surgeon and can diagnose potential problems through your well developed observation skills and x-ray vision. I thought everyone knew that?

Forehead bumps are the best of the worst. Lots of strength in front! That said, and I know it is two days later, chipcom was correct. Never mess around with head injuries.
