Will I die if I eat this?

Guess I lost track of time... I bought some ground beef for a lasagna but didn't had time to make it that same day so I place it in the freezer. Today I was going to use it but the label says "buy before 2/2/2010". It has been on freezer all the time but... is it good or should I trow it away?

    should be fine.

the bacteria that spoils food, makes it smell bad or taste funny, is not harmful if ingested.

the killer bacterias don't really make any difference in taste.
Food for thought: if you aren't dead by 2050, you and your entire family will be within a few years from starvation. Now that is a cruel gift to leave for your offspring. ;)

Smell it. When meat goes bad, you'll know. If it smells OK (or just slightly funny smelling), you're fine.

Trust your senses more than dates. Sometimes things go bad before the expiry date. Often, they last long afterwards.

Where I buy meat, it has a "sell by" date and a "cook or freeze by" date. If you bought it by the date given, and it's been frozen since, there should be no problem. As with all ground meat, it should be cooked "well done". With steaks and such, you can get away with "rare" because the potentially harmful germs are on the outside, and are killed by even "rare" cooking...but with ground meat, anything bad has been mixed through the meat, and it takes more thorough cooking to kill it all.

I went to this homeless lot thing and got a free meal and they gave me a bag of chips that were a month and a week old. Stale but somewhat good hahahaa.

Every passing minute is another chance to turn it all around.

It would be safe, frozen, as much as a year past the "Sell By" date, as long as it was well sealed and no freezer burn.

Typically old frozen meat doesn't go "bad" - i.e. become unsafe to eat since bacteria will not develop in low temperatures. The problem is the meat just breaks down after awhile and doesn't taste good - especially if the freezer is not all that clean (you know it gets that freezer smell). Old frozen meat is perfectly safe to eat - but do you want to... that's the question. BTW it ain't that old - it should be fine.

I'd cook it but let the dog eat it, considering how bad his canned dog food smells and looks. And he has no problems eating that.

If it went into the freezer the day (or day after) you bought it then it will be fine. The Girl and I buy family-pack bulks of things like ground beef, or an entire pork loin which I'll butcher into chops and roasts; and everything gets vac-packed and put into the freezer. Food can be in the freezer for months and it will still be OK. If you want it to be in the best condition, though, you should get a vacuum sealer; you'll avoid freezer burn (ice-crystallization which ruins food consistency) by vac-packing things.

Wheatley says if you need to ask that meat is no longer safe for human consumption, feed it to the dog.

If you don't ask he says to be safe have the dog test about half of it first.

Wheatley is a very good dog except for being a bit of a pig.

You can always try tasting a chunk of it before wasting your time cooking it. No point cooking it if it's already gone bad.

It is still good. I have eaten a lot of stuff that has long been expired, including Power bars. Oh yes, I have even eaten a Turkey that was in the freezer for about 6-7 years.
