I was going to reply with this before I read the story: "Because it takes less dogs to make a fine warm coat."

Second rate dog. A good herder would have herded the kid back home.

But still, the dog ranks above the parents, at least the dog did not lose track of the child.

I had a hundred and twenty pound Akita when I was growing up. His Idea of a perfect world was Himself, the Family...and everything else dead.

I have a "mini akita" aka shiba inu. I like how they or at least mine doesn't jump on anyone or roll over. She's a cuddlebug.

Nice!!! Those are still hard to come by in my neck of the woods. Akitas are a dime a dozen...prepare to watch your dog food bill double though.

I once shared a house with a guy who had a Blue Heeler - damn smart dogs and I'm not surprised this Blue helped save that girl.

This guy was a tradesman, and like most tradies in Australia he drove a 'ute'. Theft of tools from the back of utes was pretty common and Peter was good at securing his gear at home or on site, but sometimes you did have to leave stuff in the back of the truck. This is where 'Smacka' came in. She would sit in the tray and watch the world go by. You could walk up and talk to her, even pet her. But if you reached past her towards the tools...

Of course dogs are better than cats. But, the girl kept the dog warm too. Pack mentality has lots of benefits.

Neither one will grab you by the hair and pull you to your watery grave. A dog would never do this, just a matter of principal. All cats want to do this, but they are too small and they hate water even more than they hate humans.

Speaking of dogs and water- did you read about Bailey falling through thin ice? I pulled him out. For some reason the ice held when I walked out to get the dog.

He's fine. He was not in the water even 30 seconds. That day the air temp was 45.
I'm glad it was not below freezing, we were quite a distance from the car.
