Earth may have been knock of its axis!

The massive 8.8 earthquake that struck Chile may have changed the entire Earth's rotation and shortened the length of days on our planet, a NASA scientist said Monday.

The massive 8.8 earthquake that struck Chile may have changed the entire Earth's rotation and shortened the length of days on our planet, a NASA scientist said Monday.

The quake, the seventh strongest earthquake in recorded history, hit Chile Saturday and should have shortened the length of an Earth day by 1.26 microseconds (millionths of a second), according to research scientist Richard Gross at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

Hmm...dropped in to nitpick the title, but the article apparently words the reality a little better. The earth was not "knocked off its axis." Rather, the axis shifted.

The Christmas quake/tsunami of 2004 changed the Earth's rotation by more than that, I've read. Generally, though, the Earth's rotation is slowing.

1.26 microseconds? I'd be more worried if it was 1.26 seconds.

humans tend to "not worry about the little thing," until it becomes a big thing, then they just outright refuse to even try and fix it.

I was 0.76 microseconds late clocking into work thanks to this. I usually try to be 0.5 microseconds early. Hopefully the boss will take my past record of attendance into consideration...
