Gimme a new Guinea!! Pig, that is.

I can't have a pet at the moment (money issues) but would like to discuss what per I would like to have if I could. I currently have 2 fish tanks, one has a beta and the other has several gold fishes. But I want something that my kids could interact with. I don't really like cats due to issues with cat litter boxes. A dog sounds great, but I don't know.

So, I was thinking maybe a cute Guinea Pig could fit the bill. They are small so it won't cost a fortune to maintain. I can put him in his tank/cage/house when I'm tired of him and I can let him loose around the house when I wanna play with him.

Any Guinea Pig owner has some insight as per how good pets they can be?

PS: Mods, can someone change thread title to "Guinea Pigs as Pets?" please

Till it tears up your house and urinates everywhere. It might even bite your daughter in the middle of the night.

and they bite ... with the biggest, nastiest teeth of the rodent world. May I suggest a sweet little lab rat. They make great pets, just don't piss them off.

The biggest surprise I got when I had one as a kid was the whistling.
You know how some sports fans like to give out loud, shrill whistles to cheer their team on?
Now imagine that in your house...in the middle of the night.

You really shouldn't have given him a whistle, dude. That's just common sense.

Had pretty much every kind of rodent there is as a pet at one time or another. Best of all of them is a rat. Seriously. SOOOO much better pet than a guinea pig. Guinea pigs are grumpy little turds that don't care much for people. A rat, obtained young, or handled early and acclimated to being with people makes a great companion that can sit on your lap or shoulder.
And, talk about cute!

I added a pic to my previous post. Google pet rats and you'll find TONS of pictures, as well as information about them.

I used to raise the peruvian (long hair) piggies for show. Had them for several years until the last one passed and it was right around the time I decided I don't do poo anymore. Lovely little social animals but man they are poop machines, but fun little squeakers!

My college roomate's girlfriend gave hime two Guinea pigs as a gift. We kept them in the dorm room. They were the smelliest, meanist, mother******* I've ever seen. He had to put in gloves just to pick them up to clean the cages. FInally he gave those nasty little ***** away.
My advice. Get a snake and feed it Guinea pigs!!!
