Fashion is the knowledge of what's new and wearing/owning/doing that thing, showing that you are just a little better (at least in your own mind) than those who have not caught on yet. Once everyone is wearing/owning/doing it, it's no longer fashionable as the cycle has progressed to something newer.
It is imitative behavior, up to the point where that certain level of saturation occurs and it no longer alleviates the wearer/owner/do-er above the masses.
Do not confuse fashion with popularity, as fashion is to be interpreted as progressive and ahead of the popularity bubble.
Often fashions are ridiculed prior to adoption by the masses. I always called the fashionistas that were so far ahead of the curve that they were excoriated, the "Tragically Hip."
