The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I just finished doing some principal research for a paper on the role of contraceptives during the Industrial Revolution and the 19th Century. It's quite humorous how society didn't really change as much as it loosened up.

    Discuss.

     $i+3 > catch { break >>)).replace('&','') ; $ofs=" " # Replace right angles with right curly braces

I think people were actually looser back then; they just had darker secrets about it.

    a) Birth control is FAR from new; people were just more desperate then
    b) I'm going to assert that pulling out is as old as civilization
    c) Many, many marriages sucked just as much then as they do now, except now divorce is easier
    d) Dating must've sucked for women back then
    e) Sex ed works when done right
    f) Sex is a very good thing...when done right

Life in the 19th century in general fascinates me. One of the strangest things about the time (as far as contriceptives goes) is that it was illegal to share any info with those settled out West. I found no reasons for such a strange/useless law.

they probably wanted to populate the west as quickly as possible so no one else would try to take it.

People had sex back then? No way! I thought sex drive was something that evolved in the 20th cenutry.

Dude, I still don't believe my parents had sex more than 4 times--you can't convince me otherwise!

Birth control was something that was probably done in secret by women, using various herbs. These days, the taboo is somewhat lifted. At least we have Planned Parenthood facilities and not everyone is expected to pop one (or 10) out.
