Not again!

Well, here we go again! Another hurricane is taking aim at the Sunshine State. It was just three weeks since Charley went through, now Francis is heading our way! Man, I could do with out all these storms!

Round and round we go.. We haven't removed our Sand bags yet, so we are 1/2 way ready..
This one is 3 times the size of Charley, so the flooding is going to make Charley look like a small rain shower...

Anybody have an anti-rain dance?

Florida gets hurricanes almost every year to some extent. you live there fine but you get no sympathy from me when your house is blown down.
It is the same as people who say "hey I think I'll go build my house on a flood plane" then they all "Help help my house is floating away. Why me?".
"Why me?", well because your dumb and built your house on a flood plane, shut up.

Got to agree with capsicum... Same thing for the folks at the Jersy shore. "Oh, my half million dollar house (built on a freakin sand bar) ihas been washed into the sea!" Doh! You bloody well knew that Long Beach Island was a sand bar when you built/bought your half million dollar vactaion house there. Now you State and Federal (other peoples) money to fix it!?!?!? Get real ANd you wonder why the insurance companies won't touch houses in flood plains> Here's your sign!

Guess I'm a freakin' ******* too, eh?

So you are saying most peopel are not bright. Let's see, Earthquakes out west, Deadly Snowstorms in the north. Tornados in the Oklahoma, Iowa,etc.. Wildfires pretty much all over the world.. tsunami's over in Japan and Pacific rim...
You need to live in Uranus to avoid natural disaster. So I guess you and Cap are pretty much saying all people are stupid?

Too early to tell about Charlies damage, but back when that hurricane in Holmest AFB most of the houses weren't build to code. Certainly not to commonsense. While there is some point to capsicum and stacey comments they made them too broad. There are some places that shouldn't have houses built on them, but zoning folks are too gready as are the property owners to let those places stay empty. e.g. move back off the flood plane with the houses. you can still farm the flood plan it might even be fertile from the flooding.

But even with the best planning and good building practices bad things happen - so good luck to you folks down there.

Deadly earthquakes are not a common event that occurs every year more than once.
Deadly tsunami's are not a common event that occurs every year more than once.
Deadly tornados in one localized region are not a common event that occurs every year more than once.
Deadly meteroid impacts... etc.

You're both wrong to an extent.

You can't pinpoint where a tornado will touch down since each tornado covers probably 0.00000001% the land area of tornado alley. You can, however, approximate where a hurricane will strike since a hurricane is a hell of a lot bigger and covers an area several orders of magnitude larger.
You can't pinpoint where a sinkhole will open up and swallow your house. You can, however, approximate the area that a major earth quake affects since a large earthquake covers an area tens of orders of magnitude higher.

Etc.

If I build my house where I know that a hurricane will come, then I'll build a sturdier house and bet on the fact that a) it will remain standing, b) I will seek cover when things get hairy and c) a category 80 hurricane packing mach 2 winds will only strike once every hundred million years.
If I build my house in the middle of a dried up river bed knowing that it WILL flood every single year and wipe out my house, then unless I live in an anchored submarine, that's just stupid.

Yeah, but how many hurricanes really hit Florida. Yes we have had 2 in the past month. BUT before that, Andrew as 10+ years ago.

Well, duh, yeah! Look at the homes that are built in tornado alley! Freakin tin cans on wheels... and they don't even have to strap them down!

Have you ever heard of theis novel concept... responsibility of the self? You make your choices, you deal with the ramifications.

No, I'm not saying most all people are stupid. I'm saying those people who live on a sandbar and continue to rebuild year after year, are stupid. I'm saying those people who live in tincans on wheels who have had to rebuild due to high winds more than once and haven't relocated are stupid. If y'all fit this catagory... Here's yer sign!
