I bought a cheapo pair of canalphones to use at work when I need to focus. They're the Altec Lansing MUZX wooden ones for $25. I've always shied away from canalphones as I used to find them uncomfortable. However I thought I'd give it a go because these
aren't exactly work appropriate . They block out external noise, and that's necessary because I sit in a high traffic area. Anyways, the first thing I noticed trying them out is that the bass is dominant, excessively so in my opinion. It's like it is really punchy on the peak of the transient -- the loudest part of the drum beat -- but there's no reproduction of the beat of a bass drum as it quiets down, as the amplitude of the struck vibrating surface decreases back to equilibrium.
Basically I find the bass way too dominant.
Are my observations
A) Due to the fact that I'm using el-cheapo canalphones? I'm used to a setup that's probably a lot nicer than this (see image).
B) A product of the nature of canalphones; I'd imagine some bass augmentation exists because there is an airtight seal into my ear (it uses silicone molds). But this much?
C) None of the above.
