Do earbuds normally sound so bassy?

I bought a cheapo pair of canalphones to use at work when I need to focus. They're the Altec Lansing MUZX wooden ones for $25. I've always shied away from canalphones as I used to find them uncomfortable. However I thought I'd give it a go because these

aren't exactly work appropriate . They block out external noise, and that's necessary because I sit in a high traffic area. Anyways, the first thing I noticed trying them out is that the bass is dominant, excessively so in my opinion. It's like it is really punchy on the peak of the transient -- the loudest part of the drum beat -- but there's no reproduction of the beat of a bass drum as it quiets down, as the amplitude of the struck vibrating surface decreases back to equilibrium.

Basically I find the bass way too dominant.

Are my observations

A) Due to the fact that I'm using el-cheapo canalphones? I'm used to a setup that's probably a lot nicer than this (see image).

B) A product of the nature of canalphones; I'd imagine some bass augmentation exists because there is an airtight seal into my ear (it uses silicone molds). But this much?

C) None of the above.

I notice it on any headphones, when I rip MP3s I knock the bass down 6db. I only use my MP3 player with headphones so it OK for me.

There are some earbuds that won't give you the problem that you're having but they are really expensive.

So it's an unwanted feature of these headphones? I'm not willing to spend more than $25 on earbuds. I only plan on using them at work; 90% of my listening is on ATH-AD700's, which are also not appropriate for work use because they leak out as much as the let in. I guess I'll deal with it.

I kinda like the bass response in my canal buds. My mp3 player has a 5 band EQ, though so I can adjust as necessary.

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

Look at some Sennheiser Studio Standard headphones.

For earbuds, these can't be beat, but they ARE pricey.
