Do you meet interesting people?

Since I started cycling I noticed that I have come into contact with people who I would not have got to know otherwise. The only thing we have in common is that we ride bikes and we yell at cars that cut us off. I only see them very seldomly since we aren't of similar riding levels.

I find these people more interesting than the usual bunch I have picked up over the years and who all fit in a similar mold, yet I wonder why I make no effort to get to know new people.

Do you make an effort to meet new and interesting people?

Oh all the time. I try to open up and see what else there is outside of my usual comfortable surroundings. For example, I have met a wonderful group of people lately that I never thought would accept me into their group - mainly because I'm a woman! But they proved me wrong and not only am I accepted but they seem to be rather protective over me. Very giving people. They share with me a vast amount of knowledge and help me to learn so much. They come from various backgrounds and education levels so I get the whole spectrum of ideals. Awesome people.

By opening my eyes I am opening my world.

seems it is an attitude that you have and i don't. I took up a new hobby and the people are just a side effect. i wouldn't have bothered to get to know anyone just for the sake of it.

I don't really make an effort to meet interesting people, I just meet them.

I just thought of this because I think I have now collected together a 6 person paceline to do a fast century. None of us know each other really.

I meet interesting people at work all the time. Just last week I respond to this sanitation/ bad odor complaint. As I walk to this lady's front door:

I look around her patio and leave a notice for her to clean up. (That brown stuff on the concrete looks and smells like cat litter BTW):

I left a message requesting to meet with her and check her living arrangements to make sure she's ok and doesn't need assistance. I actually look forward to meeting her. Her landlord says that she saw her go to work that morning so At least she seems to be able-bodied.

Nope.

I meet almost no one while riding, and a bunch of fools at work.

Can't say we have a pressing need to meet people just for the sake of meeting people. But like minded friends are nice to have about should they be good people and interesting. .. Cycling has been our number one source for that . I think people who have hobbies and 'do stuff' are more interesting by nature.. Little is more stifling than just staying home and watching TV. If it were not for our cycling and movie clubs , most those we've met ; I'd consider a bore.. I'd consider our bike club to be our number one source of friends.
A friend. Maybe ; Once you've had too much to drink together, you are friends for life.?
No . My bike club members are more than just cycling friends.. We have much more in common than just cycling. Even if that is our major thing.. We picnic, go to movies, bars ; even share each others' family activities together such as many holidays , weddings and funerals.

most people bore me and I don't care to know anything more about them. I'm nice and friendly though for example when I sit and chat with other parents at little league games. the truly interesting people are outside of my regular circles. when i come across them I must bore them nd they don't care to know anything more about me. hahaha

Daily.

For whatever reason, the bike shop seems to attract some very interesting fringe characters.

this topic is of peak interest to me right now. I have a very hooked up work situation right now where I work (as a nurse.... pause for Focker jokes.... hummmm deee-dum... that should do it) two 12-hour shifts per weekend and get paid for three. this is offset by the fact that I took a cut in my base hourly rate to move from the hospital where I was working, but it means that food/shelter/health insurance is taken care of with five days to spare per week. this is why I went back to school for nursing versus rehab therapy! I would like more work during the week (part time, of course) because I have two college age kids, and my responsibility to them consists primarily of handing over da money.

which brings me to my dilemma... I'm not meeting people right now, and since I have a great deal of flexibilty with what I do workwise during the week, I'd like it to be something that brings me together with people that are fun. I like my workmates, but mostly as workmates. soooo... I met up with some musicians I used to play with, but discovered I don't really like them anymore! they are stuck in the past, and it's not really that great of a past. I haven't dated since the winter, and don't really hang with anyone. the OP mentioned meeting people riding, so that's one non-work option, but trying to find work that is socially fruitful is no. 1.

I hope this thread keeps going! it's really got me thinking about things that I was letting become "back burner" issues. meantime, I better hop on my bike, so if I end up doing any group rides I'll suck less.

People get into a routine and just get on with life. You make new friends when you are forced to make a move...either geography or jobs etc. basically a radical shift in your life. But once you are settled in, i think most people just don't make the effort.
