    Conference Call Etiquette

Grrr. If you have to leave the room, put your line on "mute", not "hold". The entire teleconference is now stuck with the hold music playing in the background until this jerk comes back.

If we leave the call we get into trouble. And yes, they do find out.

The worse was when I fell asleep. They heard my deep breathing. And when they realized that I haven't commented they started to call out my name. I jolted out of the nap and shouted "1215 shrink is at a 4!"

    Everybody started laughing.

Ermmm....That topic was maybe, uh....20 mins ago....

our service has a number you can dial to get a girl (not being sexist, it is ALWAYS a girl) on the line who can mute or disconnect someone's line when this or other things happen.

I need to make up a sign for my door that says, "conference call - do not disturb" so people don't come in and yell, "Wake up!! it's time for a Monster!!

We do all of our teleconferencing through the web version of livemeeting. So when this happens, the meeting presenter just goes in and disconnects the person. Its happened more than once unfortunately...

I personally put the mic on mute unless I'm actively involved in the convo. One thing that irks me is when you can hear a keyboard tapping away during a telecon. Yeah, I know people multitask, but don't let it disturb the rest of us.

Food for thought: if you aren't dead by 2050, you and your entire family will be within a few years from starvation. Now that is a cruel gift to leave for your offspring. ;)

Me too. Although I have occasionally made the mistake of 'thinking' I was on mute when I wasn't. Like...last week for example when I loosed off one heckuva sneeze. Not just an 'attishoo' type sneeze but a full bore "ERRRRRRAAASSHHHHHHUUUU!!!!" type. There was short pause before someone said "Bless you" and only then did I realize I wasn't on mute.

Mind you, that wasn't as bad as the time when we all heard a co-worker sigh heavily and mutter "If this b-d doesn't shut the hell up soon, I'm going to kill myself." The b-d in question was her boss.

i was on a call one evening with over 10 participants calling in and we all heard the sound of a soap falling into a bath. Well, it was either that or a poo falling into the toilet but we would rather think it was a bath.

Whenever I hear someone talking on a cell phone in a public restroom I always take that doubt away by flushing the toilets.

When you're on speaker phone, SPEAK LOUDLY! I hate it when the person talking sounds like they're in some far off, distant land.

If you are in a room with other people, and you're all on speaker phone, do not have side conversations. People in the room with you can ignore it easily, but it is very distracting for those on the other end of the phone. Unless you're the one addressing the group, keep quiet.

    Good point.

Apropos of nothing much; I'm reminded of a story which allegedly happened during the Thatcher-era riots in early 1980's Britain.

Police had been brought in from all over the country to handle the violence in the cities and as can be expected, the job entailed a lot of hanging around while waiting for the action to start. Although the cops were under orders to maintain strict radio silence except for urgent communications, one day a voice came crackling across the ether:

    "Jesus, I'm bored."
The next voice was from a senior officer who spluttered
    "Who said that? Identify yourself"
    The voice came back
    "I said I was bored. I didn't say I was stupid."

You just describe the Monday morning conference I have every Monday. We have 3 offices that connect through a live meeting. The bigger groups always have side conversations going on so I seldom hear what anyone has to say. Personally I don't think technology is all that swift (and yes I am in a technology industry). With the advent of telecommunicating we are all now forced to speak with each other every week - ugh! And yes we have had the lovely music, or the person who is talking into a wind tunnel... my personal favorite is the guy who is always sitting right near a mike shuffling papers... all I hear is crinkle, crinkle, crinkle... lovely!
