    Sappers in Afghanistan

I just posted a new video clip in our series called Active Duty, on South Dakota Public Broadcasting. Although I would rather be riding a bike, this gig in Afghanistan can be pretty exciting. Hope you enjoy.

I have no doubts that if any institution in the world can rehabilitate Afghanistan - after decades of continuous soviet scorched earth campaigns and internecine conflicts; lawlessness and theocratic misrule and warlordism - it is the U.S. Armed Forces and Army Corps of Engineers.

If the Afghan soldiers you are training are half as committed to their freedoms and the future of their country as the Albanians of Kosova, all your sacrifices and hard work will pay their dividends for the coming generations of Afghans and Americans.

Yep, its an interesting and beautiful place. We are well up into the mountains in eastern Afghanistan, just a few clicks from the border with Pakistan. I feel for the poeple as it is clear that as a whole they are not sure in whos basket to place their eggs. The threat of retalitaion from the Taliban prevents many from getting involved on our side. The Afghan National Army soldiers sometimes come out on missions with us and "take the high ground" or otherwise provide security for us while we do our "route clearance/counter IED missions". Its been an interesting 10 months, one I will not soon forget. Thanx for your kind words samantha.
