Getting ready for a new baby! Suggestions and tips?

Furbaby, that is. Meet Clementine, a lab-beagle mix!

This is a temporary name, as I'm not too fond of it. I'm thinking of renaming her Ada, as in Ada Lovelace, or maybe Curie. I'm also partial to Hypatia but I don't know if she'll respond to it. Yes, nerdy dog mama means nerdy dog name.

I've officially adopted her today from Beagles and Buddies, a rescue org. I've been eyeing her for over a month now, but injuries and other stuff happened It's a good thing she wasn't adopted to anyone else! I am picking her up on Sunday because of conflict between foster home and work, plus I need to get supplies and finish dog-proofing the house. I'm so excited!

I pretty much know what I need to buy (crate, bedding, food, treats, brush, shampoo, toys, obedience class); she comes with a leash, collar, microchip, rabies tags, and all her shots. Are there any other things that are good to have around for a dog?

I've owned a dog before, but I wasn't the primary caregiver (and besides, mum gave it away after two months ). Cats I know a lot about, but it's not the same thing. I've been reading and researching a lot but any tips and suggestions would be very helpful.

Yeah, I've found you can never completely dogproof a house. There's nothing like encountering your favorite pair of hiking sandals chewed to bits-the morning of your 10 day trip camping in the mountains. Le sigh.

it's good that you chose a rescue dog. my sister does rescues/treatments and it's amazing how many of them there are, and how sweet they often are in spite of their former circumstances. I used to walk a very large rescue pitbull for her when she was stuck at work - who had been treated badly - and he was a very nice animal. good on ya. her dogs are also rescues... sweethearts all.

Tofu? Weird name for a dog.

She is adorable! Looks like a lab puppy but she'll stay that size forever. It's awesome. I did want a big (like, Great Pyrenees BIG) dog, but I don't think they would be right for our family.

Dogproofing. I tied all the cords together and put lemon juice on them...supposedly dogs don't like it? We'll see. I tried to get all the small objects out of the way. Cabinets already have child locks, so those are good. Outlets...I guess I need outlet covers. Dad is in the process of installing a fence for the pool. Garbage bins need to be secured. Shoes are usually put away, but woe to anyone who leaves their shoes out. We'll be crate-training her, so that'll help with safety issues. In any case, every day until I get her I'll be going through the dogproofing checklist.

Ah, just like babies then. Or cats. There's no such thing as a 100% ____ proof household, I guess.

Ugh, I just realized my dad has the grapevine in the backyard. Hafta keep her away from that too.

Oh I was only planning on adopting from a rescue. I didn't want a puppy, so breeders/pet shops were out, and adopting from the pound had too many unknowns. Rescues really are the best option for getting pets because they can match the pet to your lifestyle!

Not really, I have a cat named Sake, another named Snitzle, Prometheus, Bob, Stinky, Binky, and Little Kitty. Three dogs named Vic, Trio and Max. Sake and Vic "told" us their names.

leave cat food higher up, where the dog can't get to.
because dogs eat any food left out.

If you're looking for a good name for your adorable puppy, don't let my mom name her. We've had more than our fair share of Princess, Tigers (yes, multiple Tigers), Lucky, Fluffy (egad), and Puss (double egads).

Spumoni. I think she's a Spumoni.

I've never had a dog but would love one. And I especially love beagles because they are so smart, fun and active. I have a friend who grew up with beagles and she never has a dull dog moment. You are so lucky.

So using jsharr math, half lab, half beagle = legal. You must name her Shyster.

Dewey as in Dewey, Cheatum, & Howe? Shyster is good too. I do like Ada. Two syllable names seem to roll off the tongue easier.

Get a big bottle of Nature's Miracle. You're gonna need it.

And one big tip I read online somewhere (don't recall)...Puppies have to pee VERY shortly after they've finished eating.

We'll see what she tells us then, because she is definitely not a "Clementine." And she's also definitely not a "Blackie" which was her original name when she first entered the rescue. *facepalms*

So maybe I should name her Lady Justice?

My sister likes Ada too, and of all the things I want to name her, it's probably the easiest. That, or Sophie Germaine.

Nature's Miracle, check. She's not a puppy though; she's two years old and already housetrained.

If you can't hear them or see them - find them fast. They are in something/chewing something they shouldn't be.

Basically they are like little kids.

I have lots of experience with little kids.

I guess another thing I have to watch out is by new jewelry making hobby...can't let the beads fly around lest doggy eats one.
