Name that photographer!!!

There was a photographer who took some incredible shots and I don't remember who it was. There was also a photo he had that I've only seen in one book and it was the most incredible shot...

He took his photos in the early part of the 20th century; 20's and 30's if I remember correctly. He was a mountaineer who started dabbling in photography. He started taking aerial photos and had a setup that allowed him to hang out the side of an airplane while taking pictures. His primary area was Alaska. He was involved heavily in National Geographic, I believe. Does this ring any bells?

The photo I'm looking for is a group of mountaineers next to a shear cliff of ice and snow. The group was overshadowed by the cliff and there was also a plane flying through. I don't remember much else about it, other than I fell in love with it.

Thanks Foo!
