Cats Can Get Heart Attacks Too-Especially Bengals

A little over 11 years ago, I rescued a little Bengal kitten tossed into the street who did not live up to the expectations of the breeder (no spots). I hand raised from around 2 1/2- 3 weeks old and kept him as I grew very fond and attached to him with his multiple spots that came out slowly. I regret to inform you all of his very quick passing from HCM or a kitty heart attack with no warning of any kind at 3 o'clock in the morning. Since I was a Bengal owner with no guidance of any kind from a breeder (obviously), I was not aware of this genetic problem in these cats. If you have such a cat-get it tested. Even so, there is no guarantee that this will do much in prevention.

But I still post it everywhere in case someone else needs to know-even on the Bicycle Forums.

I'm sorry to hear that. Yes they can have heart attacks. I once had little tortie have a heart attack in a car with me.

There's another cat needing you at a local shelter. Consider adopting another one.

I'm sorry about the loss of your beautiful feline family member. Cats go about their business with bad hearts and give no sign to anyone. I didn't know it but my cat had a heart murmur. I found this out right before I had to .....Put it this way - the doctor said that she was surprised he lasted as long as he did.

But what Gitarzan said was right. There are lots of kitties awaiting a warm home such as yours and a loving human such as you. It's not that you will be replacing your kitty, but sharing the love with another that needs it. When you are ready they will be too.

Don't worry. I do have other kitties here that were also rescued.

And they always are. There are many cats that need a home. So I do keep it a habit to have a "welcome mat" extended to all the cats in our neighborhood to drop in anytime. I don't regret ever adopting him even after what happened today. He was my dearest companion and will be missed very much. I hope others do take in and adopt these precious living beings that give so much and ask so little in return.

As for Ben being alone, far from it. Here he is with one of the cats (a Russian Blue Mix) he raised from a tiny one. As you can see, he had a busy, productive life helping me with the rest of the cat clan here!

Thank you all for your warm support. I am still in shock as it is less than 24 hours ago since I lost him. Your posts bring a huge comfort to me.

So sorry about your kitty. And thanks for letting us know to have our cats tested for heart problems. I'll definitely bring it up on my next vet appointment when I take all the furbabies (2 cats one dog).

I'm sorry for your loss. That sux. I had an orange tabby have a heart attack at the vet's office. We knew he had a heart murmur and that he might not be long lived but he did last 9 years though.

I am so sorry that you lost an important member of your family. My 9 year old Bengal is my favorite of my cats. She is just so loving but wild. Unfortunately, Bengals are known to be relatively short lived cats. Mostly because they are a new outcross breed. It hurts me just to think about losing her.

So sorry for your loss- from one (stray) cat lover to another, I feel your pain- we had a silver-spotted tabby that had very similar markings to your Bengal, but a more typical tabby face and tufted ears. He too went too soon. Keep up the good work, though- peace.
