Their sacrifice has enabled liberalism and democracy to survive and flourish, the world is a better place for their dedication and bravery.

The world owes so much to the men and women of the US Armed Forces serving in NATO and throughout the world. They guard us while we sleep.

I took my honorable discharge slightly over 20 years ago; since then, I have met only one -- ONE -- fellow veteran that I'd rather not have.

My brothers, past and present, I salute you as well; we have a shared experience outside of time. When and where is irrelevant -- we have served for the same purpose.

I look for no thanks, but freely give it to you all.

Thank you to those who have served, are serving and will serve to keep this and other countries free and democratic. It may not be perfect, but it is better than oppression.

Fixed. I would never take anything away from the US service men and women, but many other nations have given freely as well.

ok then, fair enough. Perhaps I should have said instead: “. . . NATO, and the world, owes so much to the men and women serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. . ” (since the U.S. forces stationed inside europe basically is ‘NATO’.) I didn't mean to exclude the allies of the U.S. who contribute to american led deterrence and interventions, even though the U.S. does provide the strategic "security blanket" for the rest of the west (and, also, this thread was sort of a July 4th thing).

There are, of course, the world famous "all-stars" among the cadre of Canadian officers. Specifically, men like Lieutenant-General Roméo Dallaire who singlehandedly waged a superhuman and heroic campaign through the UN; the commander of a humanitarian mission that the US tragically opted out of. I have a photo of him wearing his beret on my "heroes montage" mounted on the wall of my room (hanging right next to a photo of Wesley Clark and generals Powell and Petraeus.) Courageous men like Dallaire who saved so many, and endured so much, make me honestly wish I was part canadian.

So, of course, we salute and honor all our comrades to the north who serve courageously alongside us too (after all, you guys are our ‘first defense’ in the event an invasion is ever attempted via the polar icecap.)

That certainly seems like sort of an unusual thing to post in this thread. Kind of hilarious, maybe, but only because it is completely absurd.

Anyways, the military "might" of the russian regime is a proven paper tiger; a bellicose pushover that props up the most cowardly thugs and dictators, like a cane does a cripple.

Really? The title of the thread "I fought for you", with link referencing WWII.

Russia is many things, push over it is not. Hate to break it to you, but U.S. with it's history of bombing third world countries and installing puppet dictatorships is not much better.

Let's nip it here, before this ends up off in P&R.

I'm a little bit puzzled as to the timing of the thread. We have Memorial Day, and Veterans Day. Independence Day seems the time when we would be focusing on the courageousness of our Founding Fathers and the colonists who stood up for their self-determination. There's some commonality, but looking at American History much later than the War of 1812 seems rather out of place in early July.
The search for inner peace continues...

No, honestly, they did not fight for anyone but themselves; they only fought so that they could annex and rule over "their half" of europe.

And, to the contrary: the soviet paper tiger simply collapsed under its own wait; whereas the U.S. stood up to become the only country in the world to use its military to end the misrule of genocidal dictatorships and invaders in three different countries over a span of four years, helping each to rebuild and reestablish their sovereignty as self-governing republics.

They fought because Germany invaded, and if it wasn't for them the other half of Europe would be speaking German. So yes they fought for me. I am leaving it at that before/until it is moved to P&R.

ok, fine. If you say so.

As for me, I'd much rather be told that american armed forces were fighting for me and my country, but, if you'd prefer to hear that the russian army is coming to “liberate” you from a foreign invasion - to secure your freedoms and restore your autonomy - then you must hate freedom and the idea of self-rule, or you really like singing patriotic slavic sounding songs or something.

I think after a day or two of having to hear that on the radio, you will so wish you had your corny oldies station and good ol' western style jingoism to tune into: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNxwhnJTGMA

I meant to honor all of those serving or who have served, such as in the video. Looks like this thread has turned into something that shouldn't be in Foo. And it wasn't meant to be in P and R. Gonna have to kill this thread.

I posted what was relevant to me, since it wasn't specified U.S. ONLY. Too bad Samantha couldn't see past her own prejudices.

The patriots fought for the right to be an independent country, instead of colonies. If they didn't we would likely still be under English rule.

So thank you to them for fighting for that right and for those who have fought for this country.
