Craigslist Creepout

Am I being paranoid or is this a weird potential buyer for my Surly LHT?

"Hello
I really appreciate your response to my email.I want you to consider it
sold, pls do withdraw the advert from craigslist to avoid disturbance.I
want you to know that i will be paying via bank certified check .I will
like you to provide me with the following.
information to facilitate the mailing of the check to you .
1.....Full name to write on the check
2.....Full Physical address to post the check
3.....City, State and Zip Code
4.....Home & Cell Phone to contact you
*** Note that the payment will be shiped to your address via UPS NEXT
DAY SERVICE and I will like you to know that you will not be
responsible for shipping i will have my mover come over as soon as you
have cashed the check** Thanks"

Maybe I'm totally ignorant, but I've never dealt with a bank certified check so I really don't know if this guy is perpetrating a fraud or just rich and weird.

Fraud. Clear as daylight.

They will send you a check for larger than you agreed upon and ask for you to send the remainder back.

You cash the check and don't find out that the check is bad until the bank comes after you for the money.

Only deal locally and in cash with Craigslist.

Funny, you are not the first one to post the exact same response... word for word, someone has asked about that already.

Best advice, if it creeps you out, there probably is a reason. Steer clear... BTW there are well known scams with "certified checks". Many of them are fake. You get the check, he gets hte merchandise - you try and cash the check and find out its fake.

It would be interesting to respond to the buyer as follows:

"Thank you for your interest. Before I remove the merchandise, please send me your full name and address, email address, work address and location and the name of your bank. I do not need a certified check or money order. I prefer cash. Thank you"

See what happens. Let me know...

BTW - right off the Craig's List website - I think I posted this last time:

You can sidestep would-be scammers by following these common-sense rules:

DEAL LOCALLY WITH FOLKS YOU CAN MEET IN PERSON - follow this one simple rule and you will avoid 99% of the scam attempts on craigslist.

NEVER WIRE FUNDS VIA WESTERN UNION, MONEYGRAM or any other wire service - anyone who asks you to do so is a scammer.

FAKE CASHIER CHECKS & MONEY ORDERS ARE COMMON, and BANKS WILL CASH THEM AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE when the fake is discovered weeks later.

CRAIGSLIST IS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY TRANSACTION, and does not handle payments, guarantee transactions, provide escrow services, or offer "buyer protection" or "seller certification"

NEVER GIVE OUT FINANCIAL INFORMATION (bank account number, social security number, eBay/PayPal info, etc.)
AVOID DEALS INVOLVING SHIPPING OR ESCROW SERVICES and know that ONLY A SCAMMER WILL "GUARANTEE" YOUR TRANSACTION.

You can combat this by telling this scammer that they can pick up the bike and any excess cash (less a 20% prossessing fee) 10 days after the check has been processed. Otherwise, no deal.

I've received the same response to two different CL ads in tha past month.

Found it:

Thanks for the response.I am willing to pay your asking price.I will pay by money order as its the only way i can pay you at the moment.I will make arrangement for the pick-up after payment have been received by you. I dont mind adding an extra twenty dollars so you can keep it in my favor.Reply with your full name, cell phone number, and address where payment should be sent. Please take the posting off craigslist today and consider it sold to me. Expecting to hear from you soon.
Regards

Before you do anything - check out this prior post:

http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...aigslist+scams

or this one:

http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...aigslist+scams

Heck just search Craiglist scams and lots of similar threads come up - almost word for word like yours...

Compare:

"Hello,
Thanks for the swift reply. I am still interested in buying, I am
satisfied with the conditions and because i read through the AD and i
will like you to know that, am really interested in immediate purchase
of this item for my Daughter-inlaw..I will make my payments with a
bank certified check..I will be responsible for the pick up when check
clears. Kindly get back to me with the following informations so that
payment can be endorsed:
Name to be on the check.
Address to mail the payment to,zip code{not p o box**
Phone number both land and mobile.
After the information has been supplied,I will provide an update on
the payment..I will be highly grateful if you can withdraw the ad from
craigslist and make me your favourite buyer.
Thanks You!!"

Wouldn't it freak you out more if the replies to your ad used the Queen's English? or even worse, King James English?

Scammers always use English and grammar so poor that even poor users of English and grammar have a hard time making sense of what they're saying; good users of grammar and English can tell it's from someone whose first language is 'crap'.

Thanks everyone, I figured my Spider-Sense wouldn't go off for no reason.

BTW, is there any way to get the police involved? Like if I said yes and the police questioned this "mover" when he came to get the bike?

Reported to Craigslist. Craigslist says to report this stuff to local LEOs, but cops have a really bad track record of caring about anything bicycle-related, in my experience.

they'll get round to it when they have dealt with all the muders, robberies and parking tickets.
