Just a little civil disobedience!

Trying to take of it as we speak (type).

Some people just don't have anything better to do than cause trouble!

A simple ban usualy gets the point accross that the user is not wanted on the forums, and they should move on. Yes, its fun to test the system, it can be rather simple If you know anything about computers, or how the internet works. I would say that the majority of the users her dont know get around our banning options.

I would appriciate it if you stop wasting my time playing these games... you are right, there is not perm-ban that will work 100% of the time.

1 - Well initially you can lock a user account...

Solution - Guess

2 - perform IP ban on IP of user

Solution - Guess

3 - Ban Domain

Solution - Guess

Really...banning on a public site is very difficult if the user REALLY wants in. As Joe said, most users wouldn't bother after number 1 as most users would know they aren't wanted. Some might consider working around number 2...but again number 3 requires someone with some decent pc skills and someone who really wants to be an knob.

There is, of course, a very simple solution. I'll use a quote from one of my other favorite boards.

"Don't Be A Jerk!"

See, if you're not banned in the first place, you don't need to get back on. Try it. It really works!

If it only it were that easy. Since the dawn of onlinedom (local bbs's before the internet went 'public') trolls existed. We couldn't figure out where the came from or even why....but they were there...and to this day the online world is infected with these beasts of the keyboard. As long as there is a place for these tough guys to stick out their chests and be proud to be e-bullies (aka knobs) the troll with thrive...

heck...I just handed him some lunch

Might want to get rid of it before the unwashed masses get ahold of it.

On the other hand, it takes only a second to delete their posts anyway, and their posting style usually gives them away pretty quickly. Of course, one way around it is for the user in question to come back and totally change their posting style completely, which, from a forum perspective, basically has the same impact as removing the original user to begin with.

I always assumed troll to be a verb. ie troll the beach; troll the mall; troll for salmon; troll for suckers.
Set the hook and reel 'em in.

problem is now MAC addresses can be edited on most NICS, especially those of the "on-board" variety.

Actually the BIOS for my motherboard has entries to allow you to make your own MAC address fro the cards...so iif I wanted to my MAC address could be 1234567890ab.

But you would most likely see the MAC of my router, which is also user-definable...

MAC bans used to be the end all be all, now it's jsut as easy as changing IPS to get around.
