It's even more amusing after having watched shark week last week. The surfer seemed to think that he was safe because the great whites of SoCal are typically young ones. Well they had an episode on the great whites that breach out of the water chasing seals off S. Africa and wondered why they don't do that elsewhere. Like Southern California for instance!! Turns out the ones in S. Africa are relatively young while many off SoCal are the older and much bigger parents (or mommas about to give birth). They saw one that was almost 18 ft long off the Catalina Islands.

Turns out under the right conditions they will jump elsewhere.
