I saw him in 1987, went mostly to see the Cult, the opening act. Turned out the Cult were already on the downward slide, and Billy Idol was maintaining nicely, so they were about equally entertaining, in other words...

I thought he died. IMO, 95% of rock "stars" from the 60's, 70's, 80's AND 90's ought to retire.... especially if they have saggy skin.

What's funny is that Billy Idol was the frontman for a truly decent, very listenable punk band called Generation X that no one even remembers now. His solo career has some cool songs but I like Generation X a heck of a lot more. Got Perfect Hits on my iPod right now.

I think of Gen X as more poser-y than Billy Idol was. Solo, he was much more clear about who his audience was and how he would approach them.

You mean like Iggy Pop?

Billy Idol is/was way overrated. He's soft core punk.

Sang one song. Released it twelve different times under twelve different titles. And it wasn't such a good song to start with. To me, the most amazing thing about him is that he got away with it for as long as he did.

Billy Idol and Gen-X is some of THE most unappreciated pop in the history of history.
Gen-X will melt the ghoulies off of any USA band of that era. I think Billy lost his musical
edge when he went 80's hair with Steve Stevens but any Gen-X tune of the late 70's
you can be assured someone somewhere ripped it off from the 2nd gen Damned to
Lita Ford's shameless destruction of "Kiss Me Deadly"

Billy Idol is rock 'n Roll 100%

I think you got that totally backwards. Billy Idol was the pop version of his persona which is all about posing. Not that he wasn't a good poser, he was.

I was gonna say, Steve Stevens rocks, but then I remembered Johnny Thunders.

Johnny Thunders is my fave hero of all times.
Thats who I play like and inspired me to
take my bad keef imitation into a band setting
and not be worried about what musicians and
jazz do0ds had to say about it.

There isnt any post NY Dolls genre of rock that wasnt in some
way inspired by JT.

R.I.P Johnny

word up. so far ahead of his time.

I'd never really sat down to listen carefully to the dolls or the heartbreakers until after I was a Clash fan for some time. Holy note-for-note guitar solos, batman!

I can't really fault Stevens for doing even a shameless rip on JT. That was probably the single greatest hairdo in the history of rock and roll.

^^ He looks a bit like Max Headroom in that video. I like his voice, though.
