Here comes Jeanne

It's times like this when I wish my girlfriend could handle temps lower than 30 degrees. We'd move to my homestate of Minnesota were we'd only have to deal with some cold weather and snow shoveling. To think I used to complain about that stuff! At least I knew what to expect and how to deal with it.

I have had plans to go to Ft Lauderdale this weekend for over a month now. Looks like Jeanne is going to ruin another one of my weekends.

Surely there's something in between. Aren't there parts of the country with warmer temperatures, but without the hurricanes?

It doesn't look good for us this weekend. It's back to the liquor store for hurricane supplies.

I live in Fort Lauderdale. I wish I had plans to go somewhere else this weekend. These hurricanes are really starting to get to me. I can handle one or two big ones per season, but it seems like we have to worry about a new one every two weeks since Charley. So far I haven't been affected much by any of them, our boat in Punta Gorda survived somehow, and I only lost power in my old apartment for 4 days or so, but I'm just worn out.

Bah. Sorry to vent, but this is getting silly. And not to mention the wind will really make my commute harder.

I hear that. What aprt of South Florida are you in? I'm in the process of moving from Boynton Beach to Fort Lauderdale, although I'm not sure how much I'll get moved this weekend. And don't forget the battery powered blender, Margaritas are nice as you're riding the storm out.

I'm in Weston (west Ft. Lauderlade). I've become a slave to coconut rum!

You Might Be A Floridian If:

1.You exhibit a slight twitch when introduced to anyone with the first
names of Charley, Frances or Ivan

2.If an airboat is parked in your drive instead of a car.

3.Your freezer never has more than $20 worth of food in it any given
time

4.You're looking at paint swatches for the plywood on your windows, to
accent the house color

5.You think of your hall closet/safe room as "cozy"

6.Your pool is more accurately described as "framed in" than "screened "in"

7.Your freezer in the garage now only has homemade ice in it

8.You no longer worry about relatives visiting during the summer months

9.You too haven't heard back from the insurance adjuster

10.You've ordered gas cans via FedEx

11.You now understand what that little "2% hurricane deductible" phrase
really means

12.You're putting a collage together on your driveway of roof shingles
from your neighborhood

13.You were once proud of your 16" electric chain saw

14.Your Street has more than 3 "NO WAKE" signs posted

15.You now own 5 large ice chests

16.Your parrot can now say" hammered, pounded and hunker down"

17.You recognize people in line at the free ice, gas and plywood
locations

18.You stop what you're doing and clap and wave when you see a convoy of
power trucks come down your street

19.You're depressed when they don't stop

20.You have the personal cell phone numbers ! of the managers for:
plywood, roofing supplies and generators at Home Depot on your speed dial.

21.You've spent more than $20 on "Tall white kitchen bags" to make your
own sandbags

22.You're considering upgrading from a 16" to a 20" chainsaw

23.You know what "Bar chain oil" is

24.You're thinking of getting your wife the hardhat with the ear
protector & face shield for Xmas

25.You now think the $6000 whole house generator seems reasonable

26.You look forward to discussions about the merits of "cubed, block and
dry ice"

27.Your therapist refers to your condition as "generator envy"

28.You fight the urge to put on your winter coat and wool cap and parade
around in front of your window when you finally get power and your neighbor
across the street with the noisy generator doesn't!

29.And you might be a Floridian if:
You ask your sister up north to start saving the Sunday Real Estate classifieds

I overheard someone at the coffee shop saying that all the storms they are having is God trying to wipe Florida off the map. "Soddom and Gomorrah" all over again, she said. I was just being nosey and evesdropping on their conversation...she was talking loud enough for the whole place to hear. Anyway...interesting observation I thought. It's just hurricane season...happens every year. Although it does seem kinda back to back...hmmm...are you living right??

H. Star, I really liked that list, and that postcard imagine that, the arrow is pointing straight at where I live.

Damianb, you need to change your "location" form Sunny South Florida, to something like, "HERE WE GO AGAIN!" or "Hurricane capital of the world".

I guess it's time to HUNKER down again!

The irony is that I'm currently listening to Jimmy Buffet's Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season. Our new state song!

I think even my parrot can now say "hunker down" and "cone of probability". I hope to get in a good ride in the morning and then I think the weekend is a wash, literally!

Screw it, I'm heading to Alafia on Sunday. Big blow or not, I haven't ridden off road in a month!

It's really screwing with my mind. I was considering shaving my legs! Note to self: Must ride mountain bike more vs road bike!

I got in a hard 60 mile road ride this morning in some serious wind. I finished before any rain set in so that was good. Riding into this wind will definately make you strong. Now it's time to hunker down with the rum bottle. Good luck all!

Here is a very current sat photo. Wow, time to duck and cover, again. I hope it is not as bad as it looks.

Here is the current projected track, this does not look good either. It now looks as though it will cross over Florida.

Well, I survived. I'm sure there are some people much worse of then me, but I only lost power. Biggest downside is now I have to take vacation days to finsih my move. Just what I'd always dreamed of, carrying boxes down and then up three flights of stairs. Guess I won't have to strength train in my legs for a while. I'll be happy when the move is finished and I just have to worry about hurricanes.

H Star: I know where Westin is, out onthe edge of the Glades. The bugs have got to be ferocious out there.

bab: I wouldn't say I'm near by, but I'm just off of Cypress Creek and Lyons, if that gives you an idea. I think they are calling it the North Business district nowadays.
