What is wrong with people?

I posted this video link in the Car Free section and I want to see what Foo thinks.

Because if I try to help, then he beats me up and leaves my wife a widow and my kid an orphan? No reason to die because of a material object.

I am all for helping--if you have the tools and means to do so.

What would you expect people to do?

I would head straight to the poilice. Attempted theft.
Assault. And any other thing that I could think to press charges over. Every single one in that video....every one of them.

I think that in some neighborhoods it really pays to have one of this:

Sounds like we got a crusader. What is he trying to instigate? As stated above he should've called the police instead of playing Reality Cameraman. What's with the whiney tone? If you're gonna stand up to someone, you better step up to the plate.

I'm not an "internet tough guy," matter of fact I'm not even a tough guy in "the real world." I'm just a regular guy that has survived 40 years on the streets of North Philly, Thats all. Feel free to come visit some time.

Did the cameraman see the guy cutting his lock, track down a security guard, explain what was going on, pull out his camera or phone to record the event then return to the bike and confront the thief? If so, the thief needs to work a little quicker or find another line of work.

I don't see why the cameraman didn't charge the thief when his back was to him and run him into the light post. I don't want to sound like a keyboard commando but at some point you have to stand up for yourself and quit calling for your mommy or the cops.

And yes, I agree that the cameraman sounds like a whiner. The security guard should have hit him just to shut him up.

Seems like a put on to me. The guy taking the video seems way to calm to me.

Even so, this was just a incident over a bike. Can you imagine what things will be like when society breaks down? It's sad that there are plenty of animals and worse out roaming the streets.

My bike is my transportation. I don't have the money to replace it if it's stolen. Sometimes, it's more than just a bike.

in a situation like that, you find the nearest concrete on a stick
like one of these

and clobber the thief over the head from behind.

It's better if there's not so much concrete

Those security guards should be fired for not doing their job. Clearly the thug was not going to hesitate beating up the cyclist in their presence. The tense situation could have escalated significantly into a physical altercation, so have the police arrive on scene would have prevented that opportunity, as well as officially solving the bike lock situation.

Actually dude taking the video made it the worse.
He took the video and started he boulder rolling down the hill. He also kept goading the guy.
You have to ask yourself is the bike worth starting a fight over in unknown circumstances?

Dunno the city, don't care. Looked like the ghetto to me. Camera Guy was obviously too 'caucasian' to do anything but whine. (NOTE: it's a state of mind, not a skin color)

Since Brass-toothed Thief Boy already had the bike unlocked, you just kick him in the nads from behind, HARD AS YOU CAN, get on the bike, and pedal off. The average cyclist should be able to put some serious torque behind a kick like that.

I had my tri-racing bike and race wheels stolen from the basement of my house. Thief broke in when no one was home. I vowed that I would not have another bike stolen.
When I was riding courier, I came out to find a guy working on my lock. I kicked him in the side of the head, unlocked my bike and went on with my day. No cameras, no security guards, no "hey, what do you think you're doing?", or any other chances. Just a quick one to the noggin, and leave. A bike thief deserves no better.

While many people will whine that this is dirty pool, a street fight has no rules. I am in full agreement with your tactics.
Clang him in the stones and ride away while he's busy puking and crying.
