So, IE 9 is out in beta...

...and of course I had to try it out. EPIC FAIL!!

Mind you, IE 8 was the default (though I never used it- too cluttered for my tastes). I prefer the UI's of Opera, Chrome/Safari. Anyway, saw where IE 9 was going to be a bit more streamlined and waited for the full beta (didn't want the dev build version). Installed it, it updated itself, and crashes instantly upon launching.

It won't allow me to uninstall it- so when I tried to reinstall, I get an error message saying that what I already have is newer than what I'm trying to install. Attempted to download IE 8 from Microsoft site, and I get the same message.

At this point I'm thinking I have to either let IE9 mock me quietly or move my important files to the cloud and break out the restore disks...

I tried it out...it slowed my computer down so badly that I couldn't do anything...fortunately, I WAS able to uninstall it. I kinda like IE8 anyway. IE9 looks like MicroShaft was trying to clone Chrome anyway.

IE9 does look a lot like Chrome- that's why I wanted to try it. I like the minimalist approach to tool bars. It increases what little real estate I have on my 16" laptop display.

And apparently the next Firefox will look a lot like Chrome as well.

To be honest, if I could get AdBlock for Chrome, I think I would be done trying out different browsers. But I don't think that will ever happen..

That's the entire motivation for Google having introduced Chrome. It's not for altruistic reasons or to compete directly with Microsoft / Apple in the operating system arena. It's so they can control what you see. You can bet any eventual OS will have ads built in somehow.

Microsoft production software is Beta at best for a first few month, so do you really surprised the "beta" version isn't even working?

If you tried searching for "adblock" and "chrome" you might find things like this:

IE 9 seems like a mixed bag.

Had a student come into work. He had just "upgraded" to IE 9 and every time he opened IE, the whole computer froze. Removed IE 9 and reverted back to IE 8 and it ran just fine.

OTOH, someone put IE 9 on the front desk computer and its working fine.

To be honest, it never occurred to me to look for an AdBlock extension for Chrome. FF is gonna get a lot less time until FF4 drops...

Most of Mozilla's funding comes from Google for the search queries. If you want stick it to the man, then your option maybe limited to lynx. If you want to stick to the man, then go right ahead since I have no idea what you're trying to say.

I didn't believe you, then I searched.

In 2006 the Mozilla Foundation received $66.8 million in revenues, of which $61.5 million is attributed to "search royalties".

The foundation has an ongoing deal with Google to make Google search the default in the Firefox browser search bar and hence send it search referrals; a Firefox themed Google search site has also been made the default home page of Firefox.
That's just, wow. What would happen to Firefox if they didn't have the contract with Google?

Mozilla's contract with Google is set to expire next year- though they'll probably agree to an extension, since they are already on an extension of the original deal that expired in '08.

Though Google will still be the default search in the new FF4, users will have the option of changing that to another- including Bing.
