Need some help from Foosters

Today I visited a friend in the hospital. He's in a pretty serious fight for his life right now battling severe pancreatitis. He's been in the ICU for about 5 months so far, with no real improvement. It's only now that they're allowing friends to visit to hopefully boost his spirits. Up till now it's been family only.

Long story short, he has no easy method of communicating with visitors. He has a Tracheostomy breathing tube in his throat so he can't speak, and his hands are too shaky and weak to write legibly ... although I was able to read a couple of words. I was thinking there has to be a tablet-like device which has a extra large keyboard for him to use. I'm sure he'll be able to tap out words easier than writing. Does anyone know of a device that would work for this? I know tablets come with a stylus to write with, however I'm hoping the screen can be used as a keyboard as well. Preferably with the keyboard taking up most of the screen.

I appreciate your guy's help. This friend is very important to me and I want to try to make things a bit easier for him.

Those are some great ideas, however I think I'm looking more for a tablet device that has a large keyboard on the screen and prints out the text on the screen rather than converting it to a computer voice.

I checked out the Ipad on the Apple site, however I can't seem to find out if the keyboard can be expanded to fill up most of the screen. Anyone know if it can? Or another similar device?

Dasher - wiki
Available from itunes but open source, so is available for almost anything.
Dasher homepage

The main site seems down right now, otherwise you could just use a browser on any platform. Really simple, you just move the mouse up and down to select letters

That sucks...our daughter had a trach four years ago for a couple of months as the result of a brain hemorrhage...it was cuffed, so speaking wasn't possible. She also had pretty severe ataxia, so even the letter boards and pointing to symbols was problematic. Fortunately, she had learned to spell using American Sign Language several years ago...and my wife knew it also. We put a chart up in the room and I was able to learn it eventually also. Communication was slow but it worked for us.

I don't know if it would be possible for your friend to learn it...some other method like those above would proably be preferrable because then he could use it to communicate with the nursing staff also...we found no nurses able to read her spelling without great difficulty.

Best wish to your friend.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I ended up getting an iPad today. Just playing around with it right now. So far it seems like it may work. The keyboard is fairly large, however I need to find an App that prints the text on the screen in larger text.

Again, thanks everyone!
