    Should I do it?

Price has gone up in the nearly two years since I started saving for one, but the luthier tells me prices will go up again in January. I liked the old price

    (and hi, Neko!)

Old price (two years ago) was about $5,000. Sigh.

I don't know much about classical gtrs but I am guessing a handmade will hold its value, yes?

If you can scrape up the dough and you can play it first to make sure it speaks to you, why not?

Will probably keep its value, yes. Unfortunately, playing it first isn't really an option -- I know of a few guitar stores here that have nice instruments, but haven't seen anything quite at this level. There are, I believe, three places worldwide that have Tobias Bergs in stock: One in the UK, one in the US and one in Japan. I would be ordering straight from Mr Berg himself, for delivery sometime next summer.

I was ready to pay $5,000... but $7,500 is a bit

David Collett at the very awesome Guitar Salon International (warning: guitar porn), sent me this note knowing that if I bought a Berg it wouldn't be through him:
Let me just tell you this - if you end up buying a Berg, you will not be disappointed. I think he's one of the great younger builders, and for the price, arguably THE best. I sold one recently to Scott Tennant. I've known Scott for many, many years and he's never bought a guitar from me. This was a first. Anyway, you have my strong recommendation should you end up making that decision.

I would like to buy a really nice guitar at *some* point, but the question is whether now is a good time, and whether it's worth the risk buying this without playing it first. I do have a solid beater student guitar here and a very nice guitar at my parents', so it's not like I need a guitar desperately... but I've been looking at Bergs for years and have spent a few years saving up for one. It's just that what I've saved up now only buys 66% of one...

Here's my nicer guitar, unstrung this summer for a polishing and fingerboard treating:

If you don't buy it now, will you regret it two years down the road? It probably is not going to get any cheaper in the future.

Have you considered buying an Esteban Guitar off of the Home Shopping Network? It comes with a DVD and I think you can get a decal of an Eagle or Unicorn or a Court Jester juggling Basset Hounds on the back. I could be wrong about the Unicorn. But I know you can get one in red and black with a picture of a 2011 Camaro on the back. It would go nicely with that mullet you have been meaning to grow.

Please ignore the fact that the car pictured is a Dodge. I think they were doing a comparison. The guitar won the drag race but the Dodge sounded better.

I don't need it, and I don't think I deserve it (if I'm honest with myself, it's overkill for the level of guitarist I am now or am ever likely to be). But I like the idea of buying a guitar that's better than I am so I can grow into it.

I've told the luthier I'll be in touch with him within a week with a final answer. I would only need to pay a 20% deposit now, with the rest payable before delivery next summer -- that gives me some time to save up some more. I've been eating out too much, anyway...

    Definitely leading toward "yes."

    Dilemma over. Sold!

CbadRider -- yes, will definitely get more expensive in the future and I may well regret it if I don't, although there will always be other beautiful guitars around.

You see, their morals, their code...it's a bad joke, dropped at the first sign of trouble. They're only as good as the world allows them to be. I'll show you. When the chips are down, these...These "civilized" people...they'll eat each other. See, I'm not a monster. I'm just ahead of the curve

One of my clients owns a custom guitar shop, and he's been making next to no high end guitar sales for the last couple of years. My gut feeling is you could poke around the market a little with cash in hand and find a number of dealers who would sell you a $7500 git for $5k. Maybe not that maker's guitar, but he is not the only hot maker in the game today.
“Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

Yeah, I'd considered that. Again, there's the difficulty of finding good guitars given where I live. Anyway, any guitar I might find in China would automatically be at least 40% more expensive due to the ridiculous import duties here.

Hmmm... some more searching indicates that there may be a cedar top model available in the UK for about $5,000, and a spruce top in Germany for $5,700. Very, very interesting.

I agree with Cbad's comment that it won't likely be getting cheaper. It sucks that it went up so much as you were saving towards the original price, but if it holds its value and you will use and enjoy and appreciate it, I still think it's a go if you have the money.

I know what you mean about level of playing vs. quality of instrument, but your instrument can/should inspire you. I like banging on a cheap piece of crap sometimes for fun, and a decent instrument is fine for most of the time. But a top quality instrument's tone and playability really takes you to the next level. Life's too short, etc.

Btw, I love your current nice guitar - gorgeous bridge! Would you be keeping that in addition to the new one? Would selling that one offset the cost of the new one is any substantial way?

Thanks - I love the Yamaha, too. I'd have difficulty selling it -- it's the guitar that I grew up playing after my first teacher sold it to me for much less than it was worth. I'd consider selling my Almansa beater, but that's not going to help me very much (cost $420 new and it's been well-played).

I've spent some time today looking at less expensive options to the Berg. There are some beautiful instruments coming out of the UK from some younger makers. The wood grain on this Stephen Frith is unusual but very pretty:

I just wish I lived in a place where I could actually try these!!!

That Esteban Camaro is just screaming "Goobs, love me, touch me, play me, take me for a ride in a mini truck to the local Dairy Queen!"

Gb...that's a guitar for the likes of Parkening or Anna Vidovic. Chances are very few really deserve an insturment like that.
Having said that, if you can afford it, get it. That is one sweet instrument, and you will regret having never jumped at the opportunity to own something like that. Even if you never play at the level of those two I mentioned, you only go around once. Don't leave any regrets.
