How many pins in a simple lock?

How many pins is one likely to find in a simple lock? By simple I mean those you might find on a thermostat cover, a tool box, or file cabinet.

Nevermind. My landlord's tenants last year had a habit of turning the heat up to 80 degrees, and he was understandably frustrated because it was reflected in his heating bill (the terms of the rent are that he pays the utilities, including heat) so he installed one of those shields that block access to the thermostat.
Usually he keeps the temperature at 65 degrees, which has always been fine to me. However everybody in the house except for me left for thanksgiving, so he turned it down to an uncomfortable 59 degrees. Frustrated, I went to seek him out. He's passed out drunk in the bathroom (long night at the bar) and in no position to be bothered. So I picked the lock on the guard and turned it up to 65 myself .

I don't want to wear a sweater to bed. And 65 is a reasonable temperature.
