Everyone has a droid but me...(Tmobile question) :-D

My old samsung gravity is falling apart. Seriously, a spring in the sliding mechanism has already sprung out. The paint is flaking off, and when I push the space bar button when texting, it usually spaces twice.

Anyways, here's the problemo. As a student paying my way through college, and an apartment rent bill, along with a utilities bill, on top of a 50$/month good faith automatic loan repayments, I'm kinda pressed on money. So, if I were to upgrade to a droid with t-mobile, I must have a data plan right? But all these plans are so damn expensive.

My parents pay the bill, but no way am I letting them pay another 20-40$/month extra for some stupid on the go internet 3/4g nonsense 'required' to use a smartphone's full functionality. Apparently you don't have to buy it, however, you're required to pay full price for the phone, but a smartphone without 3G is kinda not worth it.

What is the best way to get a droid with unlimited texts, and the cheapest data plan? Or have you heard of a loophole or plan of action to go about this?

Wrong. You can buy a phone without a plan. But you won't have any internet access except when within wifi range. However, it costs a lot more to buy a phone without a plan -- expect to pay about $400.

See if you can get a discount through the university -- sometimes discounts can be noticeable (probably about 15%). However, you sound like you have Cadillac tastes and a Kia budget. If you want a full functioned phone with all the trimmings, it's going to cost you one way or the other.

Consider getting a base model ipod touch and just a regular phone that does texts. That will cost far less and get you most of what you need.

Virgin Mobile. I have 300 minutes cell talk and unlimited IM, text, email and web for $ 25/month. You have to buy a Virgin Mobile phone, and right now the only Android phone they have is the Samsung Intercept, which is what I have. It costs around $ 220 at Best Buy or Target.

Wow, for that price I'd consider one too if VM's coverage weren't so poor. They only cover about 1/4 of WI.

Well, technically, you can only get a Droid on Verizon. Droids are Motorola branded phones (Droid, Droid X, Droid 2, Droid Pro) and only one Verizon. They can be used on any CDMA network, but you'd have to buy the phone at full price.

Android powered devices are available on all the carriers (for example, the Samsung Galaxy S phones in their various incarnations), but not the "Droid".

Why have the phone without the data plan... that would make you a "phone poser"!! Just get one that'll let you make calls and text, since that sounds like what you want/need to do with it. Then when you're ready, upgrade for the latest and greatest.

I am the other person on earth who doesn't have a smartphone... I pay $25.00 a month for my cel phone's text / talk package and I got for less than nothing as I got a $50.00 credit when I established the service.

I just don't need to be that connected.

PDAs are a Pandora's box. If you have never had 1 don't be in such a hurry to get 1. They do have some very convenient features but unless you need access to your email 24-7 don't bother getting one till you enter the corporate work force. I will say the Droid is a very impressive PDA. I use a Blackberry Storm2 myself. I wish I never saw a PDA, I now suffer from total separation anxiety from it. I cant even go to the bathroom without it. If I could only unknow what I know

VM USA is now owned by Sprint and uses the Sprint network.

I was paying $52/month to AT&T for a dumb cell phone. As soon as I went off contract, I went with an Android phone to have my work Exchange email pushed to the phone. To be able to do that on AT&T, with the phone and data plan, would have cost me over $ 80/month, with less data. So being able to pay $ 25/month to get everything I need is a bonus.

I used to have Sprint with the ex-GF. They stunk if I was in the northern or western half of the state which to be fair wasn't that often. The VM site should update their coverage map then. It shows even worse than Sprint's. I'll ask around about coverage since my contract with a regional carrier will be up in March. And $25/month w/300min would be ~$10 cheaper than my current plan with no text or web.

You're a student paying your way through college with bills and not a lot of cash to spare. So to be honest with you, the latest and greatest cellphone is probably a Really Stupid Thing to be buying right now.

You can have a smartphone without a data plan but there's really not a lot of point. I have a smartphone that supports just about everything you can think of but no longer have a data plan. So I use this fancy phone to make and receive the odd call, send a few texts, take the odd picture when I don't have any of my other cameras with me, and do a few other minor things with it. For what I use it for, I might as well have a basic phone. But there was a time when I used most of its features, including the handy built-in HSDPA modem.

So I'd say the best way to get a droid is to not bother right now. Wait until this loan is paid off, until you graduate and get yourself a job and an income of your own. Once you've got your own income you can decide for yourself whether however many hours of your time it would take are worth the monthly plan to get the phone. Mobile internet can be convenient but it's not as if the world will come to an end if you don't pick up your email This Very Moment or can't get on Facebook for an hour or two.

What you really need is a droid that understands the binary language of moisture vaporators.

Not sure why you want a Droid specifically.
If you don't have a data plan and you don't want to pay for one, then the droid would have fewer advantages for you. Of course a smart phone may have a better keyboard for texting, maybe that is why you want it. And many of them have wifi so you can load apps and use the smartphone features when you are within wifi range. My daughter did this for awhile- she got a Samsung Blackjack on ATT and after awhile she stopped paying the data plan and just used the phone as a phone except when she could get wifi. Her boyfriend got a new iphone and gave her his old iphone, she took the SIM card out of the Blackjack and put it in the iphone and used it the same way. When the iphone4 came out she wanted one so I had to buy her an iphone4 and pay her data plan.

If you are willing to use a smartphone without the data plan, you can search ebay or craigslist and find a phone that you like and buy it without a phone plan of any kind, then have your carrier activate it on their plan. You can certainly do this with ATT, I'm not sure how easy or hard it is with other carriers.

You had to buy her an iphone? You had no choice in the matter?

Seriously, what happened to the option of just not buying something the moment it comes out?

I bought one for myself too. Actually I ordered mine the first day they accepted orders. She ordered hers the next day, but my order got fubarred so she got hers before I got mine. I actually ended up in the hospital about the time that mine should have come in so I didn't even get to pick it up until a week later.

OP, you have to replace your broken phone so might as well get this t-mobile Droid (LG Optimus T) phone from ebay; you can have it for less than $200,
http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trk...All-Categories

Then configure it so it will NOT use t-mobile for data; just configure it for internet via wifi. Your college campus should already have free wifi for the students; there is no reason for data plan; similarly you will just use the wifi at your apartment / home / coffee shop ... etc.

If you are technically inclined and don't mind rooting your Android phone, you can use a utility available on the Google Marketplace called DroidWall. You can configure it to deny all network traffic attempting to hit a 3G network, and only allow stuff out via Wi-Fi. This way, even if the device accidentally "forgets" that it doesn't want to use the 3G network, it won't.

Instead of buying into the whole Android thing, I got myself a Palm Pre on Sprint when they came out... bad idea, as Palm was bought out by HP and there's no plans to update the phone for Sprint... my two year contract is almost up and the phone is falling apart...

I'm sure this was said before, but buying a phone outright will let you use practically whatever data/voice plan you want. For example, my mom, who is also on the T-, is using an iPhone with no data plan and the guys in pink haven't busted her door yet.

Just for pre-emption, when you said 'Droid,' I'm not sure if you meant the phone from Motorola or an Android device. The Motorola Droid can only be used on Verizon. Considering your financial situation, I'd recommend a G1 since you can find them for less than $100 outright on eBay. (In fact, I have one with a cracked, but fully functional, screen I'd be willing to sell you for $50.) It also has a physical keyboard if you're into that. They are not very fast, however, and are not officially supported past Android 1.6 (even though they can run the latest version of Android with no problems other than speed.)
