Well, they can't see at night (very blind in the dark), and the New Years fireworks likely spooked 'em and they panicked and scattered. Flew into all sorts of things that they could easily have avoided during the day. At least, that's my guess.

the autopsies said their internal organs were crushed before they hit the ground. as if they ran into a wall or something. we had some pretty ridiculous winds the weekend that happened, in fact we had a tornado. the updates claim 4-5 thousand blackbirds over a few square miles, so i don't think it was a midair collision with strong wind debris. maybe the strong winds somehow caused a pressure differential that squished their organs and killed them?

I am gonna say they flew into hail or somesuch, or shock from lightening/thunder burst. Whatever killed thousands of birds, it would be weird to wake up to a city covered in bird corpses.
