An assertion that more gewgaws on a vehicle > horsepower when it comes to sales

As stated in another post, a big (and completely justified) concern is that the more bells and whistles attached to a vehicle, the more stuff ends up breaking.

I have become a luddite.
Clutch, brakes, reverse gear, intermittent wipers, heater, pop-top, trailer hitch, cigarette lighter to charge an ipod/phone, some sort of speakers to play said ipod through. Everything else just adds weight.

A car salesman once told me that in his opinion the single biggest selling point on a modern car is the number of cup holders. It's invariably one of the first questions people ask, or remark upon, or play with while sitting in the car.

Not safety, horsepower or gas mileage. Cup holders.

The lack of cupholders hurt the sales of German imports in the early years. That oversight has been rectified.

I own a 2002 German "flagship sedan". If you can think of a feature, it came standard. Only 3 cupholders, and one is under the front center armrests.

Of all the extravagant features only one has failed, the power adjustable headrests. At 8 years old a 162K miles, it's done damn well. Those headrests only need a $1 clip to be fixed.

Why not? Even my computer has a cupholder. :D

I have 2 cupholders that work in my Jeep. The rear flip-out ones are well past broken. The center console ones work just fine. I keep my Zune in one, and change in the one that's mostly blocked by my CB speaker.
