You may not miss tethering anyway. When I had a BB Pearl, I installed a tethering hack as soon as I found one, and used it a few times just so I could do my regular email and see full websites (the Pearl's internet "abilities" were junk). On an iPhone, the only things I functionally lost were a large screen and access to my files. I could afford to wait until I got home to get to my files, and the touch interface made web surfing reasonably useful. Later, my iPad made it even easier to leave the laptop at home.

I figure that tethering is necessary if you need your stuff and your smartphone sucks. If neither of those apply to you, don't bother.

It's still nice to watch Netfix of Hulu on the road. My rooted Android has tethering enabled and I don't pay the additional charge.

I can wait. Not eager to add $50/month to my cell bill anyway. The data/tethering pricing is whacky. Adding $50 to my bill for one phone to add that (I have four phones on my monthly bill) is a 30% increase. That's out of proportion to the benefit in my view. But then I'm not on the road very much, if I was it would be a no-brainer.

I do wonder how many consumers feel the way I do, and how much the relatively exorbitant data plan fees discourage smart phone adoption. If the data/tethering option was more like $25/month it would be far less objectionable.
The biggest issue I have with the tethering is the combined data limit. If I am paying extra a month for tether then I should get a bump to the data limit i.e. if I have a 2Gb data plan on my phone and I pay for tethering I should get at least another 2Gb. But AT&T says you pay more and there is no increase to your limit. I travel a lot so tether would be an advantage but I also get a lot of email with multi Mb attachments and with tethering I will get that same message downloaded twice once to the phone and once to the laptop hitting my limit twice. That means you go over the limit pretty quickly. At that point it may end being cheaper to buy a wireless dongle and seperate plan, which is probably what they want you to do.

I would really only want tethering for web access (to sites like Yahoo, Google, etc.) and getting emails on the road (I don't want to get them on a smart phone, that doesn't do too much for me). One of these days. Not important now. If I was on the road for business much, it would be a no brainer, I'd already have it. I'm not. So it becomes a luxury I can do without.

Don't go thru AT&T, then -- get one from Virgin, either a USB dongle or a card-sized wireless hotspot. They're still selling them with unlimited data and no contract.

This was a great idea, thanks.

I bought a replacement screen kit from Amazon ($15.95 w/free shipping). It came with the little screwdrivers. I watched the "how to" videos on YouTube and did the replacement this morning. The iPod works perfectly.

DUH! However, larger screens = larger phone. The iPhone is a great screen with a great size. The people who want an iPhone don't want a massive Droid X, Droid 2, or Incredible (I have an X and wouldn't give it up for the world...). It's not just about the screen size, it's about how well it fits in your pocket, purse, or hand.

Technology: CR warns that it's a transitional phone which isn't capable of 4g.

Well, considering that 4g according to international standards doesn't even exist, I think a better way to describe this is that this handset isn't LTE compatible. No, it's not, and that's unfortunate. However, Verizon's 3g network is currently more robust than ATT's (and T-Mobile's) 4g. It really is a moot point here.

Network reliability: CR warns that Verizon's network might not be able to handle the data influx of iPhone users.

Verizon's network is amazingly robust...and that's with an insanely popular amount of Droid products. Droid products which use considerably more data than their iPhone brethren. I doubt the influx of iPhones will mirror the network slow down that ATT suffered in New York and San Francisco.

If a consumer is concerned about the latest, greatest technology, they'll already be up and up on the "shortcomings" of the Verizon iPhone. "Shortcomings" in quotes because it's currently being measured against a different, slower network and a phone which doesn't exist yet. If a consumer wants iPhone performance, sans calling and web use at the same time, on an amazing network with amazing customer support, they'll switch when they damn well feel like it.

Vz hasn't mentioned any special trade-in deals. I think I'll wait for the 4G model, hopefully not too far down the line. Hell, I've been waiting this long already. My droid is alright, but it's no iPhone.

I just placed my order. Got a $50 discount for an upgrade credit.

I thought about waiting for 4G, but then I checked the Verizon coverage map for my area and the 4G network isn't even installed here yet. They don't give a timeline for when it will be available, just that it's going to be completely installed by 2013.

Makes total sense as to why people would want such a device, but the reason you don't see so many CDMA/GSM phones is that the circuitry is quite different -- it's not like this problem has been around for many years. It will be interesting to see what adding that capability does to the size/price.

Most consumers seem willing to pay far too much, but data and tethering can be had much cheaper. Unlimited HSPA+ can be had for $20 and there's no need to pay for tethering at all. The catch is that you actually have to have choices between carriers/phones and be willing to exercise options. The two easiest ways to tether without a tethering plan are to buy a phone that doesn't have the wireless hotspot capabilities disabled or you can just buy apps on the open market that allow you to use your phone as a USB modem.

Regardless of your network, unlimited does not really mean unlimited. That is a marketing term that covers all reasonable and a lot of unreasonable use. Sufficient abuse of systems will trigger repercussions.

I've had my phone for a few days and I don't really have any complaints. My reception is good, and it surfs the web much better than my LG Dare used to.

I like how they didn't bother to mention that when ATT sold the Iphone 4.
Seems to me Consumer Reports is in ATTs pocket on that one. Since their point is moot. It's the same god damn ****ing iphone that everybody has wanted .
