Verizon gets the iPhone

They'll be announcing it on the 11th of January :D

In other news, Steve Jobs earns a Dollar:

Correct.

I think they roll it out in Verizon stores and the Apple store Feb. 4. I will be like the idiot in this classic video.

Folks will be leaving AT&T in virtual droves. They'll be the next candidate for a bailout.

Personally I'll wait until the dust settles, perhaps by May, then punt my Droid Incredible through the end zone . . . not waiting for my 2 yr renewal term to expire.

Sprint? Don't make me laugh.

skijor 01-08-11 09:01 AM

But will the "expected" droves of former ATT customers bog down Verizon's supposed superior network of tubes and become the new whipping boy? And if so, does that prove that the iPhone is an overrated POS that cannot perform well on any network?

FWIW, I couldn't give a damn. I'm fine with a dumb phone.

You should try using an iPhone (or at least an iPad) for more than a few days. Then you'll figure out what the hype is about :)

skijor 01-08-11 09:19 AM

Hype comes with a $100+/month bill for all "smart" phones. No thanks. I don't need to be that connected. But if it makes good non-app coffee I could be swayed.

Old news. This has been a known fact for several months now, even without any "official" announcement.

I'm still not even remotely interested in living my life according to the whims of Steve Jobs. I'll stick with Android.

Are they running towards or away from iPhone Godzilla?

I must have missed that memo. I'm paying $70.

Nah. Verizon knows the game and can take the increased load better than Jenny McCarthy...

bikebuddha 01-08-11 03:51 PM

I think a lot of current iphone users will be disappointed if they switch to verizon and find out they can't use data and voice simultaneously.

At least Verizon has credible 3G up here where we live. ATT does not. And the dropped calls on ATT in the NY Metro area are fairly legendary. My guess is 95% of users could give a fark about simultaneous data and voice. They just want reliable 3G and calls that don't friggin disappear. Hey, whatever. iPhones are cool and now you'll have the choice. The HUGE advantage the GSM ATT iPhone offers is international seamless operation, you won't have that with a Verizon CDMA iPhone. So if you travel abroad on business often (and I have pals that do) that CDMA is a deal killer. I go to Europe maybe for two weeks in the summer (and not every summer), Verizon lends me a phone and charges me high per minute rates, but for $50-$100 in extra charges on my bill that month I have a phone in Europe.

I'm hoping that Verizon iPhone turns out to be dual mode (GSM and CDMA) so it will work abroad, but I don't think we're getting that.

Meh. When I was on trip in Thailand someone from England had Jail broken iPhone. They were able to use it as a modem and connect to internet from the laptop, use it to check on their emails/messages on regular bases, and in general "stay connected". I had my ebook and managed to go through a couple really great books, and didn't feel like I was missing anything.

On a side note they were getting a signal in the mountains of Thailand in the middle of nowhere, while here reception in the cities is iffy. What a hell?

Last I heard, there's some new stuff they're doing with either CDMA or 4G LTE (or whatever; I'm losing track of the terminology) that allows voice & data at the same time.

I don't think Jobs would let Verizon start selling iPhones until they can make it work correctly on their network.

That's because we in the US leave it up to the cell companies to persuade the local governments and citizenry to allow them to put up cell towers while just about everyplace else in the world has the government telling cell companies to hurry up and put towers everywhere.

This thread makes me mega-lol. For serious. Please post a link where is says Verizon is legitimately doing this.

You'll see.

You'll all see.

annc 01-09-11 08:19 PM

The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal are reporting that Verizon will make the announcement on Tuesday.

patentcad 01-09-11 08:24 PM

It's such a done deal. Too much chatter from too many reliable sources. Announcement Tuesday, launch date February 4.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. We'll rue the day.

verizon is offering the iPad now. Makes sense that the iPhone wouldn't be too far behind.

Doesn't matter to me one way or the other, though. I have an old Nokia prepaid for phone use. All of the multimedia stuff is on my laptop, where my myopic self has a chance of actually seeing things.
