Interesting Reaction

Hi Folks -

OK, so today a friend of mine and I went to the local REI to gather things for an upcoming trip. While there, they announced that there was a clearance sale in the back...so off we went. Amongst some other stuff, I found a used Novara Randonee, probably 1 year old I'd guess, for $400. It was the proper size for me. I actually started considering buying it, because I thought it was a good deal.

Now - mind you - I already have five bikes: A touring bike, a road bike (which I haven't had for a month, yet), a single speed, a mountain bike and project bike (converting to FG). This would merely be a redundant addition to the stable, nothing that I was wanting or needing...but there I was, actually thinking about buying it!

I walked out, thinking "Ye gods! This crack habit is stronger than I had originally suspected!" Mind you, this is probably how I went from one bike to five in 12 mos time. Funny how it's only after it's waaaay to late when you realize that you might have a "problem"

the last two bike purchases were because I entered one of those dam shops with another person who wanted advice on something they wanted to buy and so I pointed them to what they wanted and while I WAITED (yes, that IS the magic word) - I walked around and touched bicycles, drooled a bit and ... Oh time to leave - OK bye. However I went back.

This year - and soon - will be the first time in a few years that I am actually planning on a purchase of a new bike and not just being sucked into a drooling session at my LBS.

Welcome to BA. You are in a good place now and we welcome you to these four walls. We have 12 steps available for you to kick this nasty habit. However, there are no half measures here and you have to go all out. We suggest you find a sponsor after the first few meetings. Also, get used to drinking bad decaf coffee during the evening meetings; no one likes a wide awake Bike Junkie. We also have a book available known as the "Big Bike Book" and it only costs $5. If you cannot afford the price of the book one will be made available for you free of charge. With that said, good luck and take it one day at a time. Welcome to Bikes Anonymous.

Hi. My name is Alfster, and I am a bike adict. I really, really, REALLY want a touring bike, but I already have 5 bikes (7 if you include unicycles) ... and unless I start hanging bikes off the ceiling above our bed, I have no space left. But I really want a touring bike. Couch, any advice?

Tandems are still bicycles. Unicycles are not bicycles, neither are tricycles.

I'd sell two of my bikes for a cross bike. Or I'd just keep the other two bikes for a cross bike. I really don't care.

I'd NEVER give up one of my children for another one. SHAME on you.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Besides, the cross bike would work as reasonable substitutes for both of them.

Can't win if you don't play, UA. And if you haven't figured out how to rob a bank successfully that means you are pretty dang smart.

I have three bikes, but I need them all and they need me and I would not be complete without them. Page 30 you say?

Fine I'll give you the unicycle on a technicality, but tandems are still a problem. It's only half mine, so I only count it half.

What if you're one of those lonely people who has to ride a tandem alone?

I apologize for the late follow up...yup, REI in Saratoga. I think it was 55 or 56cm, if memory serves. It wasn't there when I came back the following day...

A Big Dummy is expensive enough that I don't really moon over them much. But I would ditch my touring bike for one.
