Golden fishy!

Just got this guy yesterday, and we've had the Black Moor since we set the tank up, kinda diggin' the Goldfish this time around, easy to care for, no heater needed, will eat just about anything, and best of all it doesn't bark, shed, or piss on the floor!

****ty cell phone pics.....I know.

I miss having my many tanks set up - I got rid of all of them but a 20 gallon, someday I'll have one set up again - (hmmm something for Ming to keep an eye on I'm sure). I like the cichlids myself and whenever I do - I will aim at these guys ... but won't happen for a long time ... enjoy your tank - I miss one.

Oh my! I remember my Mini Reef days! I had a 110 Mini Reef and a 110 North American fesh water, they were great! I saw your Yellow Tang and it reminded me of my Purple Tang, back in the day it was like $250.00! I can only imagine what they cost now!

We get everything small or young, it's quite a bit cheaper that way.

I seined these guys up from the river a few years ago. They were fun until I got tired of having to catch food for them. Then it was back to the river. They are baby billy gars, and yes, they ended up eating all those other fish and more.

I had a shovelnose for a while - he was a pig - voracious eater and he grew - gave him to a restaurant who had a big tank - with just a few other big fish (hehe - non food for him) in it. In another tank I had, housed a needlenose - which I think is a gar - he was a pig too. Both of them went to a person with that big tank (shoot I was purchasing 100 goldfish a week between those two as well as a plate size oscar) - oscar died from a worm infestation - I've never taken a fish to a vet before - but he went - guess I gave the worm to him as I treated him to some bait shrimp (infested), sigh - great fish too.

I miss my old aquarium setups. Getting married took care of that a long time ago. For some reason she did not share my fascination with my fishies.

Yeah, so did I! but this was way back when a "common" salt water let alone Mini Reefs were kinda rare to see in a home, and the fish, young or not, were pretty fudgin' expensive! If I had all the cash I spent on that set up I could easily buy a quality used car! What an idiot I was!

If I'm not mistaken they were/still could be known in the fish business as "Needle Nose Gars."

Neither did my wife, but I just recently got back into it with little resistance from the wife, now she's kinda diggin' it! =0) I guess it's 'cause I stopped buying bikes and bike related stuff as I picked up a bike for just about any type of riding I do, so I'm satisfied. ;0)

How do you keep them little? I've had a department store goldfish for 10+ years now and it's about a foot long even though I'm starving it. Tank needs cleaning a lot anymore.

I believe "billy gar" is a local, colloquial name. It distinguishes them from the more rare, and protected, alligator gar.

If this is "normal" for you you shouldn't be allowed to own a fish. BTW, they're "that little" 'cause they're babys, they're supposed to get bigger, thats how it usually works. Hope you don't have kids.

I see alligators Gars (along side Needle Nose) being sold in pet shops from time to time.

My wife started this nano on 1st January. 2gal?

This is her more established one, although she's added more since then - swaps mostly. 10gal.

And she has another one waiting that she is going to make into a salt that is 25gal.
I think she is going to be changing or getting rid of the fresh water ones - they're mainly 2 gals, but there are about 20 all told.

I agree with Tude, they look freakin' fantastic! Tude, I think thats the filter, either a hang on the back type or a wet dry pre filter maybe? I also see what appears to be knitting mesh? Whats that being used for? I've seen it used for building a moss wall in a freshwater set up.
