Look what I captured on my bike ride today.

Almost ran into the curb I was so excited to see this. I was about 2 feet from him, but kind of at his back, and afraid to move. I snapped 7 shots, and then on the 8th shot, he turned around.

Some fantastic B&W's. Took some more shots with the old Canon P&S out on the bike tonight, need to get them downloaded and look through the results.

Now that's some serious patina!

Dan, great view of the back roads. I'd probably play with the contrast a little and crop a little off the right side, but that's minor.

Here's a B&W I snapped on my ride yesterday:

Fan-friggin-tastic reflection shot Lamplight.

Don't recall if I've shared this one before, but since I posted it over on the February photo contest as my "best" I'd show it here too.

A second version of it:

First the picture:

Yes, that's a Cannon XSi, mated to a Nikon 135mm 2.8 which is probably older than I am. I've only taken a few photos with it, quick snaps around outside the house this evening to get a feel for how the pairing go together, and so far - so good.

Did a quick eBay search on this lens, and all of the examples I've seen online have a different type of checkering for the focal ring. This one is a tight diamond checkered feel, compared to the larger block style I see on all the online images. I can only guess this is an old version, it was originally paired with my dad's Nikkormat FTn. He's also got a 50mm 1.4 and a 300mm which I plan to slowly bring home with me.

These are straight out of camera, not even a crop on any of them. The minimal focal length is a bit long, for most of these close ups I set the focal ring as close as it would go and then moved fore/aft till I got the focus right.

Nice cuda! I'm assuming there's some sort of adapter involved? I know there was once a very expensive adapter to mount Canon FD lenses on the EF mount, but I never thought about mounts from other brands.

yeah, there's an adapter involved, a rather cheap one at that ($14). It's easier to put these old pre-AI lenses on new Canon cameras than it is new Nikons. I'll need to do some more practice shots to get a feel for how this lens and the light meter in the XSi play together, a few of my shots into the sun got blown out even though I had the camera's light meter centered. What I am looking forward to trying out is the 300mm with the 2x doubler, on the Canon's crop sensor. Should make for an effective 960mm lens?

Oh, I did some digging on the serial numbers, this lens was made somewhere between 69 and 73, and includes a built in lens hood.

That lens would go well on my FT2, it even has the little aperture ear. Not too expensive on KEH, either. I'll have to pick one up some day; I have a 135mm f/2.5 on my Pentax, and it's a fun lens.

Get that 50mm f/1.4 if you can. I have one, and it's amazing.

Really? I was under the impression that so long as you weren't expecting old autofocus lenses to autofocus on new bodies, it was a direct connection. I someday want to get an old digital body to share lenses with the aforementioned FT2, and figured a Nikon would be the most obvious solution, but if it's actually Canon, that'll be much cheaper.

x136, the new Nikon bodies (at least nearly all of them) have an aperture indexing prong that protrudes from the body and interfaces with the lens, this lens does not have the notch to clear that prong. There are services out there that will convert these old lenses for new Nikon bodies. The information is out there if you want to get the details and such. And yes, I hope to get both the 50 and 300 sooner than later. If I have a need for one of them I can probably borrow it from my dad till he officially gifts them to me. And now that I go look at photo of the FT2 vs FTn, I need to go look at my dad's body again and see if it has the hot shoe or not. I thought it was an FTn based on when he bought it, but I thought it had the hot shoe.

One of my picks for this week's Farktopgraphy contest "Noir: Embrace your Dark Side"
