the tree works. maybe a touch more fill, bump the vibrance of the colors and contrast a bit to bring it out a little more.

Rush hour in South Park

These guys came up on me so fast I didn't have time to change my camera settings back from the "film grain" mode that it was set on. I kind of like the washed out look.

"Faux Panoramic" War Memorial

The last one is one of my entries for this week's Farktography contest: http://www.fark.com/comments/7349698/?cpp=1
This week's theme was "Faux Panoramics". Way more fun making these than I first thought it would be. Was really hard to choose my three entries for the week. A bunch more at the end of this album that I chose not to use in the contest: https://picasaweb.google.com/1026371...ographyB_sides

//Farktography: it's free to sign up, free to vote, free to participate in the weekly contest.

If you see some pictures from me this weekend they will be from Nascar, Bite of Las Vegas, Bike Fest and the River Mountain Trail. This weekend, and the end of summer, is packed with outdoor greatness. Yippeeeee!

Sunday might be clear enough to check out the moon. In the meantime, though, here's a toad that came out during today's rain .

PS. All glory to the Hypnotoad!

This is with a EFS 18-55 kit lens which looked ordinary so played in Photoshop. Cant afford a good macro lens for a while, really want one though.

Because I'm a backpacker and can only carry a minimal compliment I only ever shoot with one lens, an 18-250, though I have many other lenses. You can do amazing things with a kit lens when you put yourself in the right place at the right time.

The only lens I've gone and bought so far is a 50mm F1.4 which has been good to play with but when I'm on my bike I prefer the 18-55 better as a all round lens that's compact and light, a 75-300 came with the camera too.
I agree the kit lenses are perfectly usable but lust after some specialty lenses.

I have the mandatory 18-55 and 75-300 also. They are probably better glass in-of-themselves that the slower 18-250 and I used to carry those two lenses with me on backpacking trips as the bare bones compiment, one on the camera and one in a water bottle side pocket on the backpack itself but another issue with backpacking and carrying dSLR cameras in the desert southwestern United States is dust on the CMOS sensor so I had to get as all-around a lens as I could and stick with it. Switching lenses in dust and wind on the second day of an 8 day backpacking trip is just not an option unless you're willing to risk a contaminated camera from the rest of your trip. For many years I shot with dozens of lenses but in the last 15 years it seems that my only interest has been in wilderness landscapes or interesting things I see on scenic routes while motorcycle touring. The best way to get a shot when it presents itself from a backpack is to holster your camera on your sternum strap right in the middle of your breast plate and the best way to get a shot when it presents itself from a motorcycle is to have the camera stashed in an unzipped tank bag right between your legs. I wished like hell I could jockey between lenses and filters and I wished like hell I could "set-up" for a perfect shot but even though my photography is almost always stills, they are always taken on-the-fly. Rather than a perfectly set-up shot, I've had to try to work on timing as a photographic technique and that means one lens, knowing your camera like you know your fingertips and not flinching when you've got 4 or 5 seconds to go from inception to open shutter. That's not to say I don't often have plenty of time to work a really nice landscape but I am never tooled up that way. One camera, one lens. Almost ever shot I've ever posted here was captured this way.
When I can no longer be an advantage photographer, I'm going to break out those great old 70's Pentax glass and work on a hole different kind of photography again.
OK, sorry for rambling.
BTW, you are really getting a great start with that new dSLR. I've got to find an effecient way to holster my camera "on-the-ready" while on the bike. I run into many great photo ops while out on the bike in some areas I frequent.

Came back from a bike/hike/photo trip a few weeks ago with many new pics. I dropped Nikon for Micro 4/3 and I'm very happy with the smaller and lighter equipment.

Full moon shot at exactly midnight. I actually like a partial moon better with a shadow cast over the crater surface.

Bee Hive corner marks the very center of Adelaide. The original bee fell off a few years ago after being there more than a 100 years and was replaced.
