Holiday Parking Ticket -- Should I contest it?

A couple weeks ago I got a parking ticket on Martin Luther King Day. I parked between two signs that said "...except Sundays and Holidays", so I thought I was in a safe zone. However, on a nearby payment machine (one that spits out tags with a time on them) there was a small list of holidays that were exempt from parking violations, MLK day not listed among them.

I didn't bother looking at the machine because what I read on the signs told me all was ok to park on the street there.

The ticket is about $40. Should I just pay it or contest it?

Are you kidding? I had to work along with millions of others that are not fortunate enough to work for a govt. entity. $40 is not a lot of dough.

The only way I would witch about it is if the "holidays" listed were as obscure as the MLK (non) holiday. If they had like Valentines day listed, maybe you have a legit beef.

Trust the list of holidays provided. Not everyone has the same holidays. I can't believe I still have to work on Groundhog Day

Well lessee.... How much will you lose from a day out of work to go to court? But yeah. I see your point there and I would contest it, if I had the day off and didn't lose pay.

Is groundhog day for real? I thought it was just a movie. Is this a joke?

Yeah I don't know. I'd sort of expect holidays to be any day that a lot of major institutions (like the government) are shut down. By that standard, MLK day would be one. But that's only if a list wasn't provided. If there's a posted list (no matter how small) by the area and your day isn't on it, you're screwed and that's that. Bummer dude. Not going to help your situation in the slightest, but it might be worth it (in terms of moral victories) to work with the people in your city/town to get MLK day put on the list or the list made more visible, if advocacy is your thing. I'm more of a pay the fine and sit on my a$$ (and yes I know umd would tell me I can say ass if he was allowed on here still) at home and b!tch about it kind of person.

I'd contest it, just to see if they can get MLK on that list.

There's more to it than pay sometimes. I got accused of passing a school bus with a stop arm out a while back (didn't do it). I worked out the cost, including fines, insurance increases, license points, etc. Then I worked out the cost to defend myself, even without a lawyer. A morning off work to show up and plead, another day off work due to the mid day timing of the trial (1.5 hours from my office), and all the time spent researching relevant laws, doing the calculations to show my innocence, etc. I would have been far better off paying the ticket and working some overtime rather than spending my time defending it. However, there was no way I was going to have that on my record as I didn't do it.

When MLK said "free at last" he wasn't talking about parking, pay the road rent.
