People posting stupid crap on Facebook

My sister-in-law recently spilled some water on her Macbook, and she posted about it on Facebook (this is not the part I think is stupid). A brief discussion following the post ensued with suggestions about the best course of action. One of her 'friends' then posted that she should buy a replacement water indicator sticker for the computer, replace the damaged water indicator sticker, and take the computer back to Apple to get it fixed free.

I said that I thought it was a rather foolish idea, since this person was openly advocating committing fraud in a public forum, and that many employers now research people's facebook profiles before hiring them (it turns out this person's profile is totally open). I pointed out that there would be other indicators of water damage. My entire post was 8 sentences long.

And then that person freaked out on me, saying she was 'joking', and that she hadn't been at all serious in her suggestion. Then she accused me of over reacting in a five paragraph 30+ sentence response.

Seriously?

tap water or even bottled water doesn't contain anything that will cause permanent damage to electrical circuitry.

just dry it out.

tea, coffee, citric juices and wine almost certainly will cause irreparable damage.

omg omg lulz !

It is amazing the kind of thing people post with the illusion of anonymity that a computer screen gives them.
They tend to forget that everything is connected from cars to computers to cell phones. And that everything leaves a paper trail
that is open to the interpretation of others. Best general rule to give people, "if they don't want it on the front page of the local news, don't put it online." Makes life nice and easy. There is a naked pic of my gf from 5 years ago that keeps popping up online that is a perfect example.

So if you don't think you over reacted then you didn't. Your life is at a point you need security. Her friend may still wait tables, so the thought of a background check is turn around lift your skirt.

It seems to me that posting stupid stuff is what the Internet is all about. I believe the saying is "Ninety percent of everything is crap."

Why are you on Facebook if you think people post stupid crap? You came here to post such crap so you are just as guilty as they.

I never quite got the whole facebook craze. I set up an account a while ago, but have rarely bothered to log in since, despite the "friend requests" from total strangers that have been spamming my e-mail. It's currently "locked" after another security breach of some description, and as far as I'm concerned it can stay that way. The content that's really stupid in that place are the pictures people post of things they did when they were drunk, or posting pictures of illegal things they've been doing, not realising that their employer and who knows who else might see it.

Let me know when you hit 792 facebook "friends", then you might be ready for one real-world friend.

I don't have an account, but I've always assumed that's the entire purpose of facebook.

Honestly, I don't really get it either. My wife made me sign up when we were dating, and now she doesn't want me to quit it. I could of course, it's just that the argument isn't worth it (She likes that her profile says that she's married to me. Trust me, I'm as surprised as anyone!)

Well crap, I'm in trouble then, I've only got 234 facebook friends. Does that mean I have to give up all my real world friends, except for one-third of one person?

I mean, to a certain extent- yeah, it is. That's sort of the point of the whole internet now. But there's stupid like 'hey, my dog farted and it stinks!', there's people openly suggesting committing a crime, and lastly there's foo!

Oh boy. Chalk up another one for the "Living alone is great" thread. No arguments if I decide to set up or delete webpages, blocks, social-networking site accounts, whatever. I know it's a matter of personal choice, but personally I'd have serious misgivings about marrying anyone who had a facebook account, much less someone who expected me to have one. Let me guess, 90% of her "friends" are just random guys who liked her profile pic.

From my observations, that's about how much value 234 facebook friends will have. Yes, I know I appear cynical, I prefer to think of it as 'pragmatism'.

That's the sort of thing I was talking about before. Think about it, most people sign on to FB with their real names anyway, so if you suggest committing crimes or whine about your job, and your boss happens to see it...
