    Got into grad school! (But...)

So, I got into the Jane Addams College of Social Work here in Chicago so that I can finally receive my Master of Social Work! I'm rather excited but now I'm in somewhat of a bind. I originally applied to be part time so that I can work during the day and go to class at night. That's the only way I can really afford to get my degree. I petitioned to go Full Time for I was informed that there was a Graduate Assistant-ship position in my department was going to be available.

    Here's the but...

Well, turns out that there isn't. Fantastic... Now I have to do the embarrassing thing of calling the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid ask to stay Part Time and void my petition to go Full Time. *sigh*

I still to have to contact the assistant to the dean of my department to see if anything can be worked out (ie. Tuition waivers, etc). Any advice of how I should approach it?

Approach it without delay and honestly. Ask about other opportunities to help fund your degree. Also, ask them to keep you on speed-dial if a similar opportunity arises at a later date. Bring along a resume, dress for the job, write down names, dates and phone numbers.

yeah, +1 - be honest - about your financial position AND your hopes and aspirations in regard your degree. Nothing like balanced enthusiasm!

Can you target a faculty advisor you would want to be your committee chair and see if that person has grant support for a grad student?

I agree that being upfront and frank is the best approach here. I ended up deferring entering my MFT program for two years only to have some life changes happen and retracting it right before school started and ended up in that fall's class. =)

Congrats, and it's an awesome field to be in!!! =)

This is my token advice lately, too: "You can't be the first person to [whatever], so just go talk to [someone in charge]."

Just go in there with an open mind and be friendly and not too aggressive (but make sure they know you can't stay in the current situation) and I'm sure it'll be fine. I was fortunate to be in a field where everyone in our grad program had full assistantships (microbiology). I don't know how y'all others do it. Impressive.

    Congratulations, in any case!
Sounds like good advice to me. I've done a good bit of volunteer work with a variety of social workers in the near NW burbs, let me know if you want to do some networking. Especially if you want to do some on May 14th while helping me hand out bike helmets to kids and talking about the benefits of bike commuting.

My response would have been something along the lines of: "Does your bike have computer controlled suspension? Then shut your piehole, this baby is from the future!"

What they said. BTW, really nice to hear from you G.
You see, their morals, their code...it's a bad joke, dropped at the first sign of trouble. They're only as good as the world allows them to be. I'll show you. When the chips are down, these...These "civilized" people...they'll eat each other. See, I'm not a monster. I'm just ahead of the curve
