How about you name the first pet Ninetynine Bottlesofbeeronthewall. Each time you get a new pet you countdown one.

Or just go the Bob Newhart way. "This is my dog Cicero and this is my other dog Cicero"

It's fine as long as you name the pet Couch.

You have a pet couch? Is that anything like a pet rock?

I had a most lovely little dog with a HUGE personality - her name was Mindy - and of course she developed nicknames that she also answered to as Ming Ming.

And for some odd reason when my rescue cat's kittens were born (with full intention of placing them all) - I had one of of the unusual kittens born total white (from a tabby). And over a period of a few weeks - this little white cat developed siamese "smuts" on her face and paws - that got darker over the passing weeks - and it was from then I rather named the kittens, didn't intend to as I didn't want to keep them but wanted to identify them on my YouTube vids for purposes of placing them ---- my little siamese type kitten just fit Ming - the first name that came to mind was Ming.

And Ming she was and is today. Kinda weird. So I have a Ming (course she has the nickname of Buggy - which she answers to as well) but it's really quite uncanny when I saw "Ming" and just said "Ming". No thought whatsoever. That was her name.

I don't like reusing a pet name. First, there are so many names in the world that reusing one seems lazy. I don't know why peole have such a hard time with naming pets, or children. I can look around my desk at work right now and come up with six good names in about a minute. Ready? Go...Picture, Coffee Cup, Swingline, Broken Tape Dispenser, Del Monte, Chapstick. There, done. And those are just the girls names.

Recycling a dog's name allows you to reuse your previous dog's personalized items. Tags, bowls and such.
